GENERALIZED
ANXIETY
DISORDER
By Susie Thompson
What is Generalized
Anxiety Disorder?
People who have
generalized anxiety
disorder, or GAD, worry
uncontrollably about
common occurrences
and situations. It’s also
sometimes known as
chronic anxiety
neurosis.
Treatment
Medications
• Benzodiazepine anxiolytic drugs can
represent an efficacious and rapid treatment for
some patients with GAD
• Antidepressants particularly the selective
serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), are widely
used to treat and prevent a variety of anxiety
disorders
• Citalopram (Celexa), Escita
lopram (Lexapro), Fluoxeti
ne (Prozac), paroxetine (P
axil),
and Sertraline (Zoloft).
The Antidepressants Dulo
xetine (Cymbalta)
and Venlafaxine (Effexor)
Treatment
Continue: Therapy
• Psychodynamic psychotherapy
and supportive-expressive
therapy — focus on anxiety as an
outgrowth of feelings about
important relationships. Another
form of psychotherapy, called
cognitive-behavioral therapy,
involves learning behavioral
relaxation techniques as well as
restructuring patterns of thinking
that foster anxiety.
Nursing
Interventions
Remain with client during anxiety
symptoms
Use relaxation techniques with the
client as needed for feelings of
anxiety
Use therapeutic communication
skills such as open-ended questions
to help client to express feelings of
anxiety
Nursing Care Plan
Interventions
• 1. Provide positive
reinforcement and avoid use
of negative reinforcers
• 2. Ascertain level of
knowledge and patients’
wiliness to learn
• 3. Listening actively and focus
on the patient discussed
her/his personal feelings.
Smart Goal
• Challenge negative selftalk with positive
affirmation in 5 out of 5
instances for the next two
days to increase confidence
in coping with irrational
thoughts.
