Linda arrives in radiology feeling nervous. She seeks advice from the nurse on
what to expect during the procedure.
The nurse calmly explains the procedure to Linda and Mike. “This scan should
only take about 10 minutes. I’m going to have you lie down very still on this table,
which slides into the CT scanner. I’ll put small electrodes on your chest that
record your heart’s electrical activity. Once inside the scanner, the machine’s xray beam will rotate around you, taking multiple 2-D images of your heart. From
these, we can create a 3-D model of your heart.”
Mike asks, “So what exactly are you looking for in these images?”
“The radiologist will be looking for any white patches inside the heart. These
white patches are calcium build-up inside your wife’s arteries, which decreases
the blood flow to her heart. A complete blockage can cause a heart attack. I’ll let
the doctor explain everything to you once the procedure is finished and he has
your results. Just know that you are in good hands.”
“Oh my goodness! I know I don’t take the best care of myself, but I can’t believe I
might have just had a heart attack!” Linda exclaims.

After the CT scan is complete, the images are analyzed by the radiologist.
He explains to Linda that they are going to have to perform an emergency
