Hospital Visit Case Study
1. Describe at least three new characteristics about Linda after reading her patient
history.
ANSWER:
i.
She is allergic to penicillin and she reacts with hives.
ii.
She takes medications for hypertension and hypercholesterolemia. She was
diagnosed with these, 6 years ago.
iii. She has a family history of hypertension and cardiovascular disease from her
mother’s side.
2. The image below illustrates a normal ECG tracing, as well as three different
abnormalities. Which abnormality is present in Linda's case? List the possible causes
of this abnormality.
ANSWER:
In Linda’s case, the type of abnormality that can be seen in her ECG is “ST Elevation”.
The ST Elevation is associated with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, smoking, and a family
history of having heart diseases especially coronary artery disease. And all these factors
confirm her ECG result as Linda also has a family history of hypertension, and her mother
died of a stroke. Furthermore, she is a habitual smoker, and has hypertension and
hypercholesterolemia (Akbar et al., 2022).
3. What is your diagnosis for Linda's condition at this time? Provide reasoning to back
up your diagnosis.
Looking at her age, family history, previous medical record of having hypertension and
hypercholesterolemia, her smoking habit, and also the ECG showing ST-Elevation clearly
suggests that she is suffering from Atherosclerosis. Old age, smoking, high blood pressure,
high cholesterol, and a family history of heart disease are all contributing factors to this
disease ("Atherosclerosis: Causes, Symptoms, Risks & Tests", 2022). Not only this, but
also her condition when she came for the diagnosis also further supported this as shortness
of breath, blurry vision and nausea are all common symptoms of Atherosclerosis. After her
abnormal ECG, the doctor recommended a CT scan for her, which gives the confirmation
that the doctor also suspects and wants reassurance by doing the additional test for the
proper diagnosis of Atherosclerosis (Felson, 2022).

shortly. For now, we're going to keep Linda here for observation." The doctor
turns to the nurse, "I'd like to get her into radiology for a CT scan. Let me know
