Comparison of literature

Introduction –The theme of slavery, injustice and racism are clearly depicted in “Tell my horse” by Zora Neale Hurston and “Not without laughter” by Langston Hughes. However, in one of the stories, the effort made by the African American is evidenced from their resistance, while in the other, the characters only complain about the ill treatment.

First Point History I determined by how individual reacted to circumstances

After the Africans were taken to Haiti and Jamaica, they were able to struggle and redeem themselves

Mrs. Rice, Sandy and Jimboy continue to be mistreated as they do nothing about it.

Circumstances are determined by how people handle them.

It is possible for people to learn from common practice and rituals

Sandy admires the ways of her grandmother

Most of the people in tell my horse and influenced by the voodoo practices (Hurston, 1990).

Despite the difference in cultures and rituals, there are people that will tend to follow the right and common practice.

With time, it is possible for the unhealthy and injustice practices to end

As shown by Hughes (2018), Sandy hopes to become a responsible man and not to disappoint.

The maroon community is able to survive the condition of slavery through resistance.

Perseverance on some things can last for a while and end through determination.

Conclusion – Ethnicity and racism can be a great influence in the life of individual. However, some element such as perseverance, positivism and resistance can change these aspects and lead to a better life. This can be seen through the life of sandy and his family as well as the maroon community in Haiti and Jamaica.
