GOOD NEWS BUSINESS LETTER (20 POINTS)
FINAL VERSION DUE AS FOLLOWS:
• By 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 7 via designated D2L dropbox
INSTRUCTIONS:
Park Ranger Public Relations has been hired by Homer Simpson to promote a new sport known as Snow Triad.
Simpson is founder and president of a nonprofit organization, More Olympic Sports Foundation (MOSF). Your
job is to develop public relations materials to support his new sport. (Additional details can be found in the
SS17 Scenario Brief on D2L.)
In your first task, you established interest in Snow Triad by developing a blog post shared with the general
public. This written piece was posted to the blog on mosf.org and shared via MOSF’s Facebook page.
Assumptions
After the blog post, interest in Snow Triad grew exponentially. MOSF hosted 10 successful competitions in
Park City, drawing crowds of 50,000 people at each competition — an impressive feat! Each competition
hosted 50 athletes who were competitive in the new sport, generating 500 new elite athletes.
Assignment Details
Simpson has assigned your second task: draft a letter to Sue Sylvester, President of the International Olympic
Committee (IOC), informing her of the success of Snow Triad in Park City, Utah. The goal of your letter is to
secure a meeting with Sylvester to discuss adopting Snow Triad an Olympic Sport for the 2022 Winter Olympic
Games. Your message must take the form of a good-news letter as discussed in class, and be addressed to Sue
Sylvester.
To succeed, your letter must include facts and data that establish why Snow Triad is a logical sport of the 2022
Olympics.
It must be addressed to Sylvester, but your messaging should appeal to International Olympic Committee
opinion leaders in general. Such details could be similar to those developed in your blog post. Also consider
details that demonstrate the caliber of athlete who participates in Snow Triad and how the sport has grown to be
popular among snow sports enthusiasts.
You will write the letter, but it will be signed by Simpson. (So you are ghostwriting.) Your message must
adhere to the general format and guidelines for business letters and reflect the four-part good-news organization
and messaging strategies covered in class.
To receive full credit, your letter must include four paragraphs, and each paragraph must reflect the messaging
recommended in the organizational strategy discussed in class.
