English Writing W131 1

English Writing W131 2

After I read the article “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan. Even though she claimed that she is just expressing her opinion, but I still get a bit shock by her point of view. In her says, there are not only one kind of English is in our life and we are using them every day without noticing them. In my opinion, English speaking only has two version in the world, one is British English, the other one is American English. It made me felt perplexed, is there really a different way to talk between people and people.

In the second paragraph, Amy Tan said “Recently, I was made keenly aware of the different Englishes I do use… the forms of English I did not use at home with my mother.” (Claimed Tan (2008, P46) I have strong disagreement with this paragraph here. For me as an example, my mother is working in business management for decades. She was trained long time ago to be the Elite in their industry, and my father is a writer, just like what is author doing. From the beginning of me to remember things, the way they talking to me is no different between they are talking with their employees, and the way I use to talk to them is no different with my peers. Despite the way my parents are talking to me, one day, one of my friend was on the phone with his parents, I find out the language he uses is totally different between talking to me and his parents.

I started to search online and find some information. I found an article about communication style. So, what is exactly a communication style? Author give us an example, “But to me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It’s my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, full of observation and imagery.” (Claimed Tan, (2008, P47) From this sentence, we can clearly see that author is truly believe her mom’s English level at this time, she even described her mother’s language by using words vivid, direct, full of observation and imagery, but what actually happened in the reality is “My mother has long realized the limitations of her English as well… I think my mother’s English almost had an effect on limiting my possibilities in life as well.” (Claimed Tan (2008, P48-49) Why does the language seem so different between author’s view and the employee who worked in the bank. In my opinion, it has something to do with communication style. Before I talk about why the understanding between two people are different, I want to explain what communication style is. “A communication style (also known as conversational style) is the way in which we share information with others through language. Although we all like to think we’re talking to someone who uses a communication style very different from our own.” (Claimed Carter, (2011)). Her mother was Chinese speaker, in study outside from my country, elder generally are slow leaner compare to youth. I understand her mother got used to speak Chinese. In order to speak English, she has to keep practicing it, but Chinese in her brain are ingrained. In the beginning of her mother to talk in English, the first thing come to her mind must be Chinese, she must convert what she wants to say from Chinese to English, but these two languages are totally different, it made so much hard than other counties people try to speak English, such as France, Spain, etc. Those counties have same origin. That’s why her mother must had tough time to speak the perfect English. Autor grew up with her mother, since she grew up with her mother, she has already got used to her mother’s meaning, even though, her mother might use the wrong word, she still can get it, so she doesn’t have to correct her mother deliberately. Author studied in the US for years, what she has learned and experienced made her English perfect and accurate. When things happened, her mother couldn’t deal with it, she can work it out as normal English speaker. This is why author find out that there are many English version exist in our life, she finds out and pointed it out for us.

From this Passage wrote by Amy Tan, English can be various, but it seems not working for everyone, I am a example for it doesn’t appear in my life at all, but for Amy Tan and my friend, it might work for them. It all depends on the circumstance and environment, someday I probably will find out that my parents are talking to me with different style too.
