Shield Law

You are a reporter who is covering a story for the Town Times about a man who entered a local bank, robbed it of $5,000, and shot and wounded a bank guard while fleeing. The suspect is at-large. You were told the suspect’s name and found out where his sister lives. You called her and she amazingly agreed to meet you at a restaurant to give you background on why she feels her brother is not guilty of any wrongdoing. In the course of your conversation with her, she lets it slip, “I know where my brother is hiding, but I am unable to tell you where that is.” You wrap up the conversation and are faced with a dilemma. Do you immediately call police and give them a tip that the suspect’s sister knows where he is staying? Or do refrain from calling authorities because you got the information from a source? What is the greater public good: protecting a news source or getting a robbery suspect behind bars? Explain your answer.

Right to Privacy

Select one of the following scenarios to discuss:

· In late 2009, professional golfer Tiger Woods decided to take some time off from his career after the news was filled with allegations of extramarital affairs. He and his wife, Elin, had been married five years and had a preschool daughter and a baby son. The allegations began to surface in the media after Woods crashed his SUV into a tree outside his Florida home in November. Was it right for the media to parade Woods’ sex scandal and family life before the public? Or should his privacy been protected? Explain your answer.

· Actor Ronald Rittenberg (fictitious name) has a distinguished career of more than 20 years in motion pictures. Just last year he was nominated for a Best Actor award for his role in a Gulf War film. He has received other nominations and awards through the years. You are a news assignment editor for XYZ Television. An anonymous phone call advises you that while Rittenberg was vacationing in his RV in your county, he fell and broke or sprained his ankle. He reportedly is at the local hospital’s emergency room seeking treatment. Do you send a reporter and cameraman to the ER to find Rittenberg for a story? Or do you respect his privacy and let him pass through your community unnoticed? Explain your answer.

Your initial post should be at least 250-300 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7.
