One of my mentors liked to say, “horses for courses,” meaning that different strategies are appropriate in different situations. Often, a project’s success or failure depends on large part on its choice of development strategies.

Please find a report of a recent software development project, and determine which of the strategies from Chapter 7 that it followed.

What was it about this strategy that helped make the project successful?

What obstacles had to be overcome to make the strategy work?

Strategy is simply finding a way to develop a good plan to figure things out. Account for measures of people, merchandise, finances and the layout of the overall direction. JCPenny had tremendous success in 2017 by increase customer satisfaction with online coupons which increased loyalty programs by 10%. Productivity of employment tenure from 6 months to 18 months. Solid branding, sales strategy and develop campaigns that market a vast focus on diversity and growth. JCPenny was development strategies, which beat out Sears and Macy’s. Iook forward to the next lesson. Thanks in advanced!

    Dobie,

I can see why JC Penny’s increased their sales. I received a text message just about every day during their peak season. If I wanted to by anything, I would have taken advantage of their sales.

    Dobie,

Sears also tried to reach a customer base by sending text offers of sales. I went to the store in reponse to one of these prompts and found the shelves empty of the products. Of course they offered  to order it for me online and pick up at the store. I said no. I returned home and ordered it myself, and had it shipped to my home. The reason Sears was not as successful as JC Penney is the lack of  availability of products.

    Good Morning,

I agree e-Commerce is definitely the reason for all the downsizing and closing of the Department stores. I personally shop on-line because I hate shopping. I can just on the web and pick what I want and order it and the prices are cheap with the discounted offers that the on line company offers.

    Dobie August,

I have no idea about JCPenny. But the last time I had go to Macy, they had Macy Thank for Sharing 2017. They would ask me would I give them $25 dollars bill for $25 coupon to Macy store. If I would give them the $25 dollar bill. I would had lose by now, because the coupon would be expire and that was the last time I go to Macy.

JCPenny has most definitely made themselves a top competitor for other department stores. Their new approach to customer marketing and product pricing has highly benefited them. In late 2011 when the company originally decided to lower all merchandise pricing and do away with coupons they suffered a large drop in sales and repeat customers who looked for the thrill of coupon cutting. Some people simply don’t pay attention to the value of what they are getting for their dollars spent simply, how can I save more?”.  After watching their stock offerings drop to single digits and having to close several stores they reproached their sales again. The e-marketing they provide now offering limited time door buster sales and other short-lived promotions proves to certainly be enough to get customers in and excited about the regularly low pricing they offer on everything throughout the store. Sometimes re-approaching your development strategy can be all that is necessary to make a business flourish. Excellent choice for this weeks discussion Dobie.

AT&T, owns DirecTV which is one of the largest satellite television providers.  With the growing popularity of streaming services, AT&T has created a second division, DirectTV Now which is a cloud-based television streaming service.  It is the “wireless” and equipment free version of DirecTV as it requires no hardware, it is mobile/viewable on any device that has access to the Internet.  It is also less expensive.  It does not have all the services DirecTV has (yet), such as digital video recording (DVR) but that is currently in beta testing and will be provided eventually, also through the cloud.

The example of a success from the reading in this weeks chapter is Software of a Service. One of the most recognized software packages in the world is Microsoft Office. Ten years ago Microsoft Office 365 was introduced as Software as a Service. In the last quarter of 2017 it surpassed the license revenue from Microsoft Office for the first time. The reason for the success was the integration of being able to use it on any popular machine, Windows, Macintosh, I Phone, I Pad and Android devices. Secondly being able to work on any project that was prepared and saving using Office 365 and being able to access that project on any computer in the world as long as there is Internet access. Lastly not needing extra computing power to run Office  as a Service.

    Brian,

This is really out there. Years ago we never imagined the Internet, yet alone where it would take us. Do you think the Internet will be ended as we have seen other technology fade away, such as phone lines? I can’t even imagine what will replace cell phones, but something will. Saving documents on a computer will eventually be 100% replaced by the Cloud. As more and more companies open shop on the Web, we will see more brick and mortar stores close. As these changes take place, retailers are going to need to shift their focus on home shoppers. I used to love going to the Mall. Now I only shop online.

Agile method is the newer analysis method. It is known to incrementally build series of prototypes constantly changing and adjusting them to user requirements. This method is less traditional and with less documentation and accountability. A recent successful example of using this strategy is the case of Spotify. Spotify used Scrum which is an Agile development framework to become faster, better, and cheaper than industry giants like Google, Amazon, and Apple. Spotify made sure that its Scrum masters were experience Agile coaches, that as well as excellent team coordination and system waste removal reportedly had helped it to be competitive with the industry giants.

There plenty of GPS App for a smart phone. It depend you drive in the high way or urban area. I personally use At&T Navigator, because I travel through street. Some GPS for high way, and some are for kid, and assume them to have a smart phone, because they riding bike, and explore there community like WAZE. The  zoom in or zoom out GPS is set in a different, therefore it gives different feature for GPS. People who trying to get to work. I would not care about WAZE GPS, “Daily Commute.” distance.

An example of a successful development strategy is the traditional model- with the traditional model, software vendors develop and sell application packages to customers. Google is one of the leading software companies in the world. Google has used the traditional model development strategy with the new and improve Google App Script – Google sells the App Script to customers that want to start their own application that allows the developers to “manage, debug and monitor” all of their Apps Script projects. There will also be a dashboard that is built on top of the new Apps Script API, which replaces and extends the Execution API. It’s a restful interface, allowing users to create, manage, deploy and execute their scripts from their preferred programming language. Now, Apps Script supports more than 5 million weekly active scripts that are integrated with a host of G Suite Apps, and more than 1 billion daily executions.I believe the main reasons for the success with Google is always staying ahead of the competitors, being the first to offer the latest software to it’s customers as technology constantly evolves.  One of the obstacles that Google had to overcome to make this strategy work was to offer a better defense against hackers.  A security vulnerability in Google Apps Script allowed hackers to download malware via Google Drive URLs to a victim’s computer.  Once informed about the vulnerability, Google blocked installable triggers and simple triggers from App Script.

    Dwayne,

I would not expect Google to use a traditional waterfall life cycle. Do you have a reference?

    Hello Professor,

I have the understanding now that the traditional model is software vendors develop and sell application packages to customers. The customer would purchase a license that gives them the right to use the software.  Software as a Service is a model of software deployment where an application is hosted as a service provided to the customers. Further, research I’m leaning towards a Software as a Service for the Google Script App, because I didn’t find anything stating the customer has to purchase a license for the Google Script App and Google uses JavaScript as a host for the App.

I picked Facebook to discuss this week because I think it brings an interesting twist to a change in development strategy in this discussion. I am not a user of social media but I recognize its large presence in the world today.

In Facebook’s early years they only allowed people with a “.edu” e-mail address to join their community making their members only college students and few faculty of the college. However, they could not keep up with the new social platforms hitting the web that welcomed all to join bring them close to shutting down the company. In 2006 Mark Zuckerberg opened the site to anyone 13 years of age and older. This established quite a presence for them on the social media platform of the web.

Today they now are the number one social media site and flooded by not just people looking to connect but business looking to connect with their customers. With a large number of businesses using Facebook to promote their services, sales, and products this provided them a huge money-making opportunity. Similar to SAAS, “Software as a Service”, they provide marketing for businesses as a service to companies looking to further promote themselves to users on Facebook, which of course comes with a fee. This change in development strategy has made them millions of dollars allowing their company to not only provide communication for friends but marketing for the businesses all those Facebook users give their dollars too.

Brittany i do agree  with you on the subject of using Facebook to connect with customers. Business use the site to advertise their services and connect to people who are looking for a certain service. Do you think that when Facebook was originally launched that it would grow to include people and businesses? And did they think it would ever get as big as it is today?
