Writing a paper about current event

It is import for people to know and understand local, national, and world events. This assignment consists of accessing a news article pertaining to the federal government. The source must be less than one week old from the time of submission. Acceptable sources are: The Dallas Morning News, NPR, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, CNBC, MSNBC, CNN, Fox News, and The Economist.

The purposes of this assignment are:

1. to increase your ability to research current events in government,

2. to increase your understanding of a particular area of government,

3. to connect concepts you are learning in class material with real-world issues.

You are to include the following criteria in your assignment:

1. Article title and source –

a. Using the MLA style of citation, where did you get the article?

b. You must include the article in a format so that it can be retrieved:

1) If you are using an internet source, include the url so it can be accessed.

2) If you are not using an internet source, cut out, photocopy, or print the article, then scan or attach it.

2. Summary – Briefly and in your own words, summarize the content of the article.

3. Connection –

Connect the article to one or more concepts we have covered in class.

a. Define the concept(s) that you state the article connects to.

b. Describe how the article illustrates the concept(s).

4. Viewpoints –

Identify the different perspectives that could be present in, or affected by, what is included in your article. Think about our discussion of changing demographics. How might the information in the article affect people from different groups such as race or ethnicity, age, region, religion, family structure or size, education, gender, etc.

5. Reaction –

Take a position on the issue contained in the article.

a. What ideas, positions, or assumptions do you want to challenge?

b. What do you agree with and why?

Write your paper in paragraph form using good sentence structure with proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Write the paper in your own words. If you need to use a short quote, cite properly. The paper should be one to two pages in length, doublespaced, one inch margins, and 12-inch point font. It should be turned in via eCampus. This is not a critique of whether the article is good or bad. This assignment is to make a connection to the classroom material and to explore the different sides of the issue.

2. President Trump decided to repel a program called Deferred Action for Childhood

Arrival also known as DACA. “Under DACA – which was created through executive action

by President Obama in 2012 – people who come to the U.S. illegally when they are

children are protected from deportation and granted work permits.” (DeMarche) The

main issue that concerns everyone is that those children, many of who are now young

adults, will be deported back to where they were born. But many of them only see

America as their home. President Trump has given Congress six months to find a

solution for the immigrants that were connected to DACA, roughly 800,000 immigrants.

3. The article is connected to the class concept of Separation of Power, the power that is

divided into three branches: executive branch, legislature branch, and the judicial

branch. The executive branch, also known as the President of the United States, is

ending a program that was created by executive order. The President has stated that

the legislative branch, Congress, must find a way to pass a federal law that reestablishes

the same concept as DACA. The judicial branch has a role in this too, although they are

not mentioned in the article. The judicial branch is responsible for checking that the

actions of the executive and legislative branches are constitutional.

4. The demographics of the U.S. will be affected if Congress does not find a solution to the

ending of DACA. According to the textbook, the Hispanic population is the second

largest ethnic group in the U.S. By ending this program, 800,000 immigrants will be

deported back to the hometown where their parents were from. From their viewpoint,

they do not want to be separated from their families, jobs, and school. For many, the

U.S. is all that they have known. Another viewpoint might be immigrants who have

traveled to the U.S. through legal immigration. They might not see the need for a special

program for undocumented people.

5. In this article, I wish to challenge President Donald Trump in his decision of ending the

DACA program that former President Barack Obama created. Does our President know

what he is doing other than getting rid of people he dislikes? In the article, Roy Beck

stated, “It is time for President Trump to stop breaking one of the clearest campaign

promises he made.” (DeMarche) Because Donald Trump was determined to stop

immigration from terror-prone places, but did not say anything about immigrants that

has been more helpful than harmful to the United States.

President Trump has voiced his concerns about the DACA (Deferred Action for

Childhood Arrivals) program. DACA is a program that was started by President Obama that

protects undocumented children that came to the US at a very young age with their parents.

President Trump is now considering terminating this program that could lead these often called,

Dreamers, to be deported to the country that they and their parents originally came from. Jeff

Sessions, Donald F. McGahn II, Senator Orrin G. Hatch and others have spoken against Trump

ending this program. Major entrepreneurs have also disagreed with Trumps new proposal

because of the potential of damaging our economy. Trump has stated that by Tuesday, he will

give an answer on whether he plans to propose this to legislation.

A major concept that connects to this article is the separation of powers in the United

States, including the executive, judicial and legislative branch. The executive branch enforces the

laws, the legislative branch makes the laws, and the judicial branch interprets the laws. This

concept is very important pertaining to this article because even though Trump will decide on

Tuesday on whether he wants DACA to end, Congress will decide to pass or not pass the federal

law. Without the separation of powers, the president could virtually put any law into place even

if it seemed unconstitutional. Another concept that is important along with separation of powers,

is our checks and balances. Checks and balances give each branch the power to check on the

other branches and keep them accountable. This concept can relate to this subject because the

legislature can reject the president’s new plan and can also override the executive’s veto by a

two-thirds vote. The judicial branch also has a role as they are a check on the legislature and can

rule certain laws unconstitutional if need be. As Trump makes his statement in the coming days,

it’s not only his voice that is important in this matter, but Americans, the judicial, and the

legislative branch.

With this topic, there are several viewpoints to consider. One perspective that some

Americans have, like Trump’s, is that DACA is a program for those who are illegal immigrants

and can cause fear in some citizens whose jobs are being taken from them. As American

demographics change and the Hispanic population is growing in the US, these changing

demographics are a consideration in how ending this program could affect the diversity of our

country. Hispanics are the second largest ethnic group in the US and their voice and viewpoints

are important to consider in issues of immigration. While the Hispanic population and those who

support the DREAMERS might want this program to continue, other ethic and racial groups,

who come to the US through legal immigration means, might want this program to end.

I agree with keeping DACA. I think of the Dreamers and how they moved to the United

States because they had to with their parents. They didn’t have a choice in the matter and most of

them were so young that the only country they know is the United States. I think the DACA

program is a very controversial topic but one that is important. To think that people who have

spent most of their life could be deported back to a country they are not as familiar with or

maybe not even know at all is disheartening. The article stated that to end DACA would mean

that “about 800,000 undocumented immigrants […] would be subject to potential deportation”

(Davis). I would like to challenge this because I think it would be almost impossible to recruit all

800,000 of these people to deport them. Also, the cost to do this would be extremely high. It

honestly would be a waste of taxpayer money. Because this topic is so controversial, I could not

find anything I could agree on about removing the DACA program.
