World’s largest restaurant chain.
Consumers tastes are changing and Subway has failed to change with it (Strategic Drift).

2016 Subway had 26,744 store fronts (including, Turnpike, Petro and Flying J Truck stops).

2017 Subway has 25,835 store fronts (losing the Turnpike contracts).

By the end of 2017, nearly 1/3 of all Subways locations could be unprofitable.

Franchisees are now responsible for developing an entire region with no help from corporate.

400 franchisees were protesting the chains plan to bring back $5 footlongs.
Subways head of North American marketing, Karlin Linhardt, resigned from the company.
Traffic has fallen 25% over the last 5 years.

When was the last time you went to Subway?

What happened?

No longer has the freshest ingredients.
No longer able to get local produce daily.
Instead the franchise said that Subway delivers produce once a week.
Many times, the lettuce would go bad and taste like shredded paper.

Many new fast-casual upstarts such as Sweetgreen that delivers fresh fruits and vegetables daily.
Subway went from crucial staple in health conscious people to completely forgotten.
Poor choice of mascot?
Companies don’t do things like this unless they are in pain, as hundreds of Subway locations may close.

What happens to the local economy if these stores close?
