The article entitled. “Argument,” by The Writing Center, was very informative, and made me look at how I concise a paper in a whole different perspective. I never stopped to think that when we are assigned a writing assignment, whether it be labeled an “Argumentative” assignment or not, that there will always be an idea that you are explaining in your own words, thus trying to make the reader understand your stance, and ultimately, get the audience to agree with your point of view on the specific subject. In life I try to always see all sides of a situation, whether I feel strongly for one side. I am well aware that everyone has different views on everything, and I do my best not to pass judgment on someone based on their side of an issue, whether I agree or disagree. In writing a paper, however, it helped me to learn that there are so many methods that I use in real life situations, that I have not thought to use when I support my thesis with concrete evidence and suggesting how my opinion could be swayed by an opposer. Sitting back after reading this article, I thought about all the writing assignments I have due for each course, and it proved the article pretty accurate. Each paper I have to write, whether be this class, history, ethics, or oceanography, I have to conduct a main idea on what I have read, explain it in my point of view, and also have to argue and counter argue each of the assignments in one way or another. I really love to write, especially on topics that I feel strongly about, but when it comes to topics that do not necessarily interest me, I tend to struggle when conducting my thesis. The tools and tips The Writing Center’s article offered, I believe, will definitely benefit me when I go to write any and all of my writing assignments for each class I am enrolled in.
