(Tonyelle) What was the biggest challenge in putting the team guidelines together? When you bring a group of diverse individuals together to form a team, challenges such as communication and trying to get back in the groove of things from a long holiday back and probably being off of work. We probably not use to have back to back assignments like this starting off the first week of school. Then you may have to be in a leadership role, in your mind you like I have plenty of stuff going on I can do it but, I don’t want to do hopefully somebody can come up on the net first and say they would take the lead. At the end everything should and would fall in place to have a successful team.

To make these guidelines work better within the virtual setting it must be effective, guidelines must be clear, consistent, agreed-to, and followed. Communicate, participate, cooperate, support each other, and coordinate joint activity. Guidelines may be used to define and standardize team procedure, use of time, work assignments, meeting logistics, preparation, minutes, discussion, creativity, reporting, respect and any controversy. Email and written letters have no emotion, no voice inflection and no body language to help the reader understand the meaning. In certain instances, written messages can be effective for a team. In other cases, using a written message could cause a problematic misinterpretation of the meaning. Important issues within a team should be discussed face-to-face or over the phone. Quick messages can be sent in written form, but there should be some sort of verbal follow-up to insure the proper meaning was derived.

How often should your team revaluate these guidelines and update, the guidelines should be consulted and enforced through reminders and team process checks. The team leaders should reevaluate the guidelines and updates in every meeting to understand the other team’s scope, open issues and status. This should occur during the first few weeks after the teams conduct their self-assessment. This will depend, of course, on the relevant timing and milestone.

(Raymond)The biggest challenge of putting together the team guidelines is getting to know the team and establishing that team dynamic. With this being the first week of class I believe many of my teammates are just trying to get understand all the requirements of the class while trying to establish a team dynamic with their virtual teammates. Many of us are still trying to learn our team mates and do not want to make a bad first impression by inadvertently doing something to offend anyone on our team.  This can be done easily because we are not able to see verbal facial cues from our teammates. Another big challenge is the different time zones that all the teammates are in. Trying to find a time that works for everyone to review the team guidelines and get together for the first time as a team is somewhat of a challenge. The finial challenge I see is many of us had a month off from school for the holiday break and are just trying to get back into the rhythm of work and school.

Is there anything that will make these guidelines work better within the virtual setting?  I think one thing one thing that will make these guidelines work better is open and honest communication. I believe the more we communicate the better. I don’t believe that we can over communicate with a virtual team. I think the more ways we find to communicate i.e. video chat, teleconferences and webinars the better off as a team we will be.

How often should your team revaluate these guidelines and update? I believe that the guidelines will have to be revaluated all throughout our virtual team experience. The more times they are revaluated the better. Every time we complete a milestone in our research, to ensure that they are working for the group or if they need to be changed. I think as we sync as a group the more refined our team guidelines will become.
