Please fully listen to (1) podcasts from the Zero to Three website and provide answers to the questions below.
ZERO TO THREE’s podcast series,
Little Kids, Big Questions
, addresses some of the most common (and challenging) issues facing parents of babies and toddlers, such as: helping a baby learn to sleep through the night; dealing with a picky eater; and learning to set limits on children’s behavior. The series is hosted by Ann Pleshette Murphy, a past contributor to ABC’s Good Morning America Parenting Segment and Vice President of the ZERO TO THREE Board of Directors.
Once you are done listening, please complete a 1-2 page summary. In your document, please:
1) share the podcast titles and author
2) explain why did you chose this area to explore
3) offer what specific materials and/or suggestions did you find most interesting?
4) tell what area you plan to investigate more about and where you plan to obtain the information
5) Since family’s differ, what suggestions do you think may differ depending on the family’s culture, economic status or environment characteristic, please explain.
Please explain how parents and other caregivers can support early stem learning?

1) share the podcast titles and author
Title: How Our History Influences How We Raise Our Children
Author: Dr. Dan Siegel
2) explain why did you chose this area to explore
McCarthy mentioned that the children look to their parents as they try to make sense of the world they are discovering (McCarthy, 2017). Their parents had discovered their world in the same way looking to their parents. The better understanding of the world that parents has discovered provides understanding to help their children to discover a better world for them. There are so many factors which influence the development of children and most of them are directly related to the parents. The parents socio-economic situation, geographical locations, culture, and so many other things plays an integral part in child’s development. Johnson stated that “Some of the main factors that influence a child’s development are his family, where he lives, and socio-economic status” (Johnson, 2016). Furthermore, she has stated that “These factors often cross over and blend as they are often related” (2016). One of the most important and less focused topic in the child’s development is parent’s own history. The way the parents were raised by their parents consciously or unconsciously influences the development of the children. This podcast provides very essential information about this very important subject. It is important for every parent to comprehend these facts that they need to understand the impact of their past on the future of their children. This podcast provides you tools and information which can help to minimize the impact that we are leaving intentionally or unintentionally on our children’s future. The reason to select this podcast is learn and share the information which can helpful in the development of our children’s future not repeating the things which influenced us negatively during our upbringing.
3) offer what specific materials and/or suggestions did you find most interesting?
Past is so powerful and we are influenced by our past positively or negatively. Sometimes we behave in a certain a situation in a certain but we don’t choose to behave like this. This could be the influence of someone’s past and Dr. Dan discussed that one third of the population had a negative experience of their past being child. It is important for parents to make sense of their lives and not repeat the same mistake during their children’s development. The awareness and understanding of the their past and its impact on their children’s future will help to set a positive direction for them. I really like the joke that
Anne shared that “I remember someone made the joke, why did your parents push your buttons? And, you know, the answer is because they installed them” (How Our History Influences How We Raise Our Children, 2016).
The most significant point for me in the discussion was that parents often repeat things from our past unconsciously when they communicate with their children. The attachment research of the Dr. Dan fellow psychologist shows that the way of parents communication directly influences the children’s mind development in every culture and setting. The 20% of kids don’t feel any emotional attachment with their parents because parents were unable to communicate with their parents and deal with their thoughts and feelings. The child raised up in this situation will also not able to provide information and tools to their kids to deal with their emotions and thoughts.
Another important thing in the discussion is that parents don’t need therapies or medical attention if they are not communicating with their children in a right way. They need right tools and information to interact with their children in a receptive way.
4) tell what area you plan to investigate more about and where you plan to obtain the information
Dr. Seigel talked about the tools and information which could be helpful for the parents to deal with the emotional side of their children. The best way is communicate with them about their inner world. I want to investigate further about the proper way of communication with the children about their inner world.
He also beautiful explained about being receptive and reactive as parents. I need to find more ways to being receptive with kids especailly in the teenage when it is apparently to do so.
I went through couple of articles during my research. Their links are provided below:

https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/evil-deeds/200806/essential-secrets-psychotherapy-the-inner-child
In addition to these article, UMUC library, online journals, and magazine about child’s development will be my target of getting information.
5) Since family’s differ, what suggestions do you think may differ depending on the family’s culture, economic status or environment characteristic, please explain.
We learn to communicate and understand our world through the context of our languages, traditions, behaviors, beliefs and value Why Culture Matters For Children’s Development And Wellbeing. (n,d). Different families have different cultures values, economic status and environmental characteristics. Most of suggestions discussed in this podcast are perfect for an advance and civilized societies. But, it could be difficult to follow them in the societies which are not very civilized and have different cultural values and belief system. For example, in some culture parents find it difficult to talk to their kids about adolescence. Either due to culture or belief or power of the past. This is time when children go through a lot of emotional changes. In some cultures, it is considered good to be reactive instead of receptive. Talking about the inner world of the child, in some cultures and beliefs it is considered iniquity if a child express his or her inner feelings, especially about sensitive issues like adolescence and sex education.. These are the suggestion which could differ with the family culture, socio-economic, and environmental values.

Stem stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Stem can be used to express these subjects; science, technology, engineering, and math individually. It can also be used to explain that how these subject work together in the learning process. One of the best use of stem in our context, stem is a technique or method of solving problems, asking questions, and exploring the worlds in the early age of a child’s development. Although young children often show great natural curiosity about the world and remarkable capacity to learn on their own, they need adult assistance to foster, guide, and build on their interests to ensure adequate early STEM experiences (Early Stem Matters, 2017). According to Institute of Medicine and National Research Council, parents and other primary caregivers are among the most influential factors in young children’s learning and development (Role Of Parents And Caregivers In Supporting Science Learning For Young Children, 2016) . Children are involved in stem learning every day through different activities and games in their daily life. Parents can enhance this early stem learning by regular conversation and interaction with their kid in the home and outside settings. The homes, playgrounds, parks, children museum and centers can be used as informal learning environments. Children as infants try to learn and understand different things around them. They observe, investigate, and try to discover the world around them and this is the early stem learning. “Research shows that early exposure to STEM has positive impacts across the entire spectrum of learning (Rodriguez, 2016).
Children start to learn about different things about life in very early age. Dukakis et al. (2017) stated that “During the early years when children begin to develop language and social skills, they’re also learning about early science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through play and everyday interactions with their parents, caregivers and other children”. When children play, explore and asks question about different things around them, they practically learn stem skills. The proper guidance and interaction of the parents and early caregiver can really develop their stem skills in the early age. It is important for parents and early caregivers to know the language and techniques which can help to develop stem skills in the children in the early age of their life. The early stem learning and skills help children to think better and solve problems which they confront daily.
Observation and using the senses could be first step in learning stem for infants. Parents and early caregivers can engage children in a way so that they can observe and use their all senses.
There are many children rhymes which introduces early stem learning to the children such as five little monkey, wheels on the bus etc.
It is helpful to link words with actions. The words can used to describe the different positions of the baby.
Let them ask questions and try to answer their question. You can also ask them questions and teach them about different things with fun activities.
Different regular home activities can be used to teach them about early stem such as setting the table, washing the dishes, and doing the laundry.
