The mission of NYCTF is to staff school in high need areas or rather those places that profoundly need teachers. Joining NYC is a sacrifice since the teachers involved change their lives and career to start teaching in the classrooms. Selected candidates are also not given a chance to choose their teaching areas but are told to teach wherever they are posted. I highly value education hence my involvement in this program. My specialization is also in mathematics which I have a passion for passing the knowledge to others. I also have my educational ambitions that I would love to pursue at the end of it all. My interest in NYCTF comes from the fact that when at the same time I am passing my mathematical knowledge to others, I am still reaching for my academic dreams. Amidst all the benefits that come with the involvement of the program, I feel that I should give back to the society too.

The academic success of students in the high need schools is defined by the quality and the quantity of the teachers in the classroom. The recruiting of teachers in this program is thoroughly done to acquire those with the best skills and abilities. Retention has also been considered for the purpose of having sufficient teachers all through hence the academic success. Social-economic status affects the educational standing of the students whereby those schools that are highly endowed with financial resources for the sustenance of teachers perform well as compared to those with insufficient financial funds. The family background is also another factor which affects an individual’s academic success. Students who have a firm family background are enrolled in high notch schools that give the students a firm foundation. Their success is almost guaranteed. The previous schooling can impact their potential for academic achievement due to the switch of cultures from the last school to the new school.

I believe that I will be succeeding in making sure each and every student that I teach will achieve their academic goals. My aim is not the benefits that are coming from the program but the passion I have in giving education another whole new meaning. My skills and abilities are also a plus for me since I have done quite well in the exams that I have undertaken in line of my field. Being shortlisted as the best among the many shows that my ability is of a high notch. I will, therefore, work hard and employ unique strategies to make sure every student meets their goal. Working with populations involving people with special needs and institutions with low income is quite a challenge. They, therefore, need special skills to upgrade the students’ performance. I feel that I will apply such skills like having a close and smooth relationship with the students. This will help them to change their perspectives of teachers in that all they do is punish students. When they have a notion that a teacher is like your parent, then they will be open enough to share their challenges. Knowing the problems early enough will help all those involved to solve it soon.

This student whose performance is below average and is not well concentrating in class may be affected by some issues. One, it may be because she has a negative attitude towards the subject I am teaching. The negative approach usually leads to a student’s lack of interest in learning the subject. Secondly, she may be affected by adverse situations back home hence resulting in stress. Circumstances like extreme poverty lead to a student finding no need to learn well. This is because they feel that education is not essential and won’t save the situation he or she is facing at home. To determine these causes, I will have a private meeting with the student; create a right environment so that she can have the strength to open up. In the meeting, I will ask her questions in a friendly way that may have led to her lack of concentration. Once she opens up, I will promise a combined effort to curb the problem and bettering her performance too.

Most of the time the student’s performance is directly proportional to his or her behavior. In addressing the student’s low performance. I would tell the student the consequence of bad behavior. This includes punishments and suspension from schools. I would further explain to the affected child how important it is even in life to have a recommendable behavior. Secondly, if the student is being affected by issues at home, then I will make a point of contacting the parent or guardian to come to the school for a discussion. This is to find out if he or she is aware of what is affecting the child’s performance. Whatever the outcome, we will collectively look for a permanent solution. I believe that these strategies will help improve performance not only of the child but also of many others to come. The policies are teamwork based which is a form raising the bar not only in school but also in other institutions.
