Group Policy, Security, and Windows® Firewall Practice Labs
Group Policy is commonly used to configure computer settings in a domain that uses Active Directory (AD). Basically, Group Policy allows you to configure a large number of computers through a more centralized system rather than physically going to each and every computer to setup the desired environment.
I was very excited about these labs because, as an administrator, I constantly work around and deal with group policies established by my organization, but I do not create the policies. I work for the IT department and have full admin rights so I am not affected by many of the group policies, but I work on computers that are. My supervisor has established a large majority of our group policies and I have always been curious about how they are created. We have several group policies that enforce specific rules for computer in different organization units throughout our parent domain.
These labs have given me a much better understanding of how the group policies are created and have walked me through the steps necessary to create policies myself. Its never been a question of understanding group policies because I fully understand what they do but I had no idea how they were created. Now I do. The process seems very straightforward, but I would need a couple walk throughs to let it really sink in.
I explained to my supervisor that this week’s instruction was covering group policies and firewalls which he thought was great. He may even allow me to become more involved in the process since I have been exposed.
