INMGT 400/600 Individual Project
Leadership: A Transferrable Skill – Part C
Professional Portfolio Artifact of a Mastered Leadership Skill/Ability
(8% of project grade)
Employers are most interested in what applicants can actually do, and during job interviews they will attempt (with probing questions) to establish if you actually can do, or have done, what you are claiming you are capable of doing. The easiest way to answer these questions is first, by using the STAR technique (describe the specific Situation that you were in or the Task that you needed to accomplish; then describe the Actions you took and the Results of those actions), and second way is with an artifact – a piece of physical proof that you have ‘been there and done that’.
Overview of Individual Project Part C – Professional Portfolio
The purpose of Part C is to assist you in developing a professional portfolio by documenting one artifact, related to a specific leadership competency (skill or ability), that you could use during a job interview when you are asked a question similar to – “Tell me about a time when you had to assume the leadership role of a work group.”
To this end, Part C consists of a one-half page summary highlighting a specific leadership competency (refer to Leadership Competencies Model – Reading #1) you have mastered followed by a one page facsimile of a supporting artifact that serves as proof of your leadership abilities.
Explanation of Requirements and Evaluation Criteria for Part C
1. IMPORTANT – go back and review the specific leadership competencies and associated observable behaviors (refer to Leadership Competencies Model – Reading #1).
2. Select one leadership competency that you believe you have mastered
and
that you have some type of physical evidence to support your belief (an award, a newspaper/newsletter article describing your leadership skill, a photograph of you as a leader/participant, a part of a course project you worked on, just about anything with your name and/or image and reference to a leadership activity or competency).
IMPORTANT NOTE: Academic achievement and technical skills are not leadership skills/competencies, and will not be accepted for credit.
3. Construct the following two documents:
a) Artifact summary page – using a bold, 14 pt. centered, Times New Roman font title Example of My (name your specific leadership competency or skill), write a 1/2 page (estimate), double-line spaced summary in 12 pt. Times New Roman font, explanation/ description of 1) what the following artifact is or what it is representative of, 2) what the specific leadership competency or skill is that the artifact is evidence of (what knowledge, skill, or ability it shows you have – NOTE – it should be the same one you identified in the title), and 3) how the artifact serves as evidence or proof of your mastery of the competency/skill.
b) The artifact – in a Word doc or pdf file provide a copy or facsimile of whatever document, photograph, work sample, article, news story, award, certificate, etc. you believe serves as proof of your mastery of the named leadership competency or skill. – NOTE – it does not have to be the original (like the near right photo), a representative illustration (like the far right drawing) is acceptable for the purpose of this part of the project.
Examples of artifacts proving that a person actually did do what they said they can do.
4. Submit artifact and summary to appropriate drop box before the due date and time listed on the class schedule.
