ENG 106 / The Romantic Heart Paper

As we move more fully into the Enlightenment and Romantic periods, we see a still greater emphasis on individual experience, especially on the individual’s emotions. This individual experience takes many forms: connections with nature, an embrace of pride, a rejection of social standards.

Write a 700 word paper analyzing of one aspect of the role of emotion in the Enlightenment-Romantic age. As you do, you must draw examples from at least three of the assigned literary works, or other works from this time period. 

Describe any characteristics shared by the pieces you have selected. As you discuss these works, you must show how their authors built on the authors who have come before them. 

This task can be done in many ways. You could note, for example, concepts that these authors assume, indicate where and how they work in an established tradition, or show how their works challenge earlier works. 

Explain the influence of these Enlightenment and Romantic masterpieces on their era and on future masterpieces. 

Focus on your chosen theme as it is illustrated in your selected works, and provide specific examples to support all claims.
