Prepare engineer drawings

Summary

Today, I was introduced to the basic engineering drawing and sketching. A brief explanation of each type of drawing was given in order to facilitate their mechanism such as Isometric Drawing and Orthographic Drawing. I spent the rest of the training day observing the company’s engineer working on preparing some drawings for the projects.

Take customer specifications

Today, I learnt how take different customer specifications on the engineer drawings. It was clear that the specifications are based on the type of drawing that a customer wants. The specifications provided by the customer must conform to the general engineering standards. I spent the rest of the day observing how the company’s engineer took customer specifications on different projects.

Work with engineer on stress and strain

Today, the company engineer introduced me to the concept of stress and strain. I was given a detailed explanation on the main types of stress that include tensile, compressive and shearing stress. I was introduced to the concept of strain in engineering in which case the Young’s modulus was elaborated upon among other details on the strain topic. The rest of the day was spent on reviewing the concepts learnt.

Today, I worked with the engineer on the details of stress-strain analysis. The general principles underlying the concepts were outlined and discussed including fluids mechanics, constitutive equations and Newton’s laws of motion. The fundamental problem in the analysis was discussed, types of structures and the relevant experimental methods. I also worked with the engineer to analyze stress on some projects he was working on through the mathematical method of stress determination.

Today, I was introduced to the strain curve that shows the relationship between stress and strain of a particular material. The components of the strain curve including ultimate strength zone, yield strength zone and point, rupture, strain hardening region as well as necking regions were discussed. The apparent and actual stress areas were also identified. The rest of the day was spent making strain curves for different types of materials to be used in projects that the engineer was working on

Provide final set of prints

Today, the company engineer provided me with different building projects prints for me to look at and familiarize myself with. I looked at the different prints and familiarized myself with the concept of contact print and negative. The engineer allowed me to look at prints that he was still working on and engaged me in giving my opinion on what he should add or remove in the plans.

Today, the company engineer took me through the process of making blueprints in details. We discussed facts around the replacement of blueprints with white prints identifying the differences from examples of both types of prints provided by the engineer.

Fabrication of signs

Today, I learnt five key steps in producing and manufacturing signs that include: signature approval on design drawings, signature approval on signage quote, 50% down payment and purchase order for second half of payment, sign permit application and lastly, building owner signature. These areas were covered in details and the company engineer showed me photos of signs he had previously worked on for observation of what signs should actually look like.

Acquire raw material and skills techniques

Today, I learnt that acquisition of raw materials to make signs is specific to the kind of sign being made. Every sign is unique thus the materials needed to make them are equally particular. It is important to ensure that the materials are of high quality such that the end product is of similarly great quality. The rest of the time was spent helping the company engineer collect raw materials for a sign that he was working on fabricating.

Today, I learnt that depending on the complexity of the sign being fabricated, specific fabrication techniques have to be used. Signs can be made using standard procedures on methods of making signs, tools and equipment needed in sign fabrication as well as the safety and precautionary measures that should be taken. The rest of the training day was spent helping the company engineer work on a road sign that he had already started working on.

Learning methods of cutting and burning, metal forming, machining, welding and final assembly

Today, I learnt and used the different methods of cutting metal for the purpose of sign fabrication. These methods include: cutting the metal manually using hand tools, cutting using machines like a grinder, lathe, punch, water jet or flame and plasma as well as use of laser to cut the metal (a method that assures precision).

Today, I learnt how to make metal parts through mechanical deformation. The company engineer took me through the forming process and the specific concepts of rolling, extrusion, forging and indenting. The rest of the hours were spent on practical applications of what I had learnt.

Today, I learnt how to assemble the pieces of metal to make a complete sign. The assembling process is facilitated by thread fasteners, rivets, and use of adhesives as well as welding. The rest of the hours were spent helping the company engineer assemble the road sign he had been working on.

Understand the process of metal coatings

Today, I learnt about the different materials that can be used to coat metals like paints and lacquers to change the properties of the surface of metal. The company engineer outlined the functions of different kinds of coatings and the rest of the hours were spent on experimenting with the different kinds of coatings that were available.

Today, my training hours were spent on fine tuning the details of the processes of coating. The classes of these processes include vapor deposition that may be done using either chemical or physical means, conversion coating, spraying or gravure. The rest of the hours were spent on practical application of some of the processes learnt.

Metal cutting and/or forming process, metal cleaning (rinsing and bathing)

Today, the company engineer expounded on the process of forming and discussed tensile forming and shear forming. The process of cutting metal was also expounded upon and details provided on the concept of casting, bulk forming, sheet and tube forming. I applied what I had learnt using the material available at the company.

Today, the company engineer explained to me the different methods of cleaning metal including aluminum aqueous cleaning, steel aqueous cleaning as well as brass/copper/bronze aqueous cleaning. The respective processes were discussed in detail and the techniques learnt applied for the rest of the training hours.

Chemical conversion coating, anodizing, plating, electroplating and painting

Today, the company engineer explained the details of chemical conversion coating. Examples of this type of coating were outlined and discussed including bluing, black oxide coating on steel and chromate conversion coatings. The rest of the training hours were spent helping the company engineer coat some metal surfaces with the relevant coats.

Today, more types of coating were explained by the company engineer including anodizing, electroplating, plating as well as painting. I spent time painting a sign and experimented with the anodizing and the electroplating concepts. The company engineer allowed me to observe how the copper electroplating machine available at the company works.

Begin to understand Marketing products

The company engineer explained what Marketing of products means as a general concept. Later, the engineer began to facilitate the marketing in engineering field specifically and he provided some examples. The rest of the day spent in observing the marketing team and the marketing process details.

Today, the company engineer allowed me to work with the marketing products so that I could familiarize myself with how they work. The engineer spent most of the time providing instruction for me to ensure that I fully understand the marketing process. We chose some sample products of the company to work on them. Finally, we’ve focused in one product marketing and it was successfully done.

Learn the clientele base

Today, the company engineer allowed me to access the company’s database that contained information on the company’s clients. This allowed me to learn a couple of thing about the clientele base including their characteristics as well as their needs. We reviewed some clients specifications and requirements to understand how we can satisfy all of them.

Specify the customer needs

Today, I was able to identify the needs of different clients and documented them on behalf of the company engineer for the purpose of the projects that the clients needed the engineer to work on. Also, we chose one random client in order to facilitate how clients request their specifications and requirements in details and how the engineer take these requirements to complete the work in accordance with them.

Creating marketing for a given population

Today, based on the needs and characteristics of the clients, prior looked into, I established that the best marketing tool for the company to in order to reach as many clients as possible is internet marketing through company websites and social media platforms. I discussed with the engineer the importance of using the internet in general and the social media in specific to reach largest interested people and attract great number of new clients. Finally, we discussed on the best method to keep our current clients by the consistent improve of the company’s work.
