Often, one must persuade an audience to act. This requires the presenter to speak to the history of the topic for presentation, as well as how to best persuade his or her audience to take the action suggested. If you find it helpful, you may wish to create an outline to help you prepare for your presentation.

Select a topic from the following list:

  • An issue in your community or on a national scale that requires a resolution, such as a local policy or law you feel should be created or changed
  • An event or action plan for your local community or workplace, such as hosting an art fair, introducing a recycling program, or cleaning up a local park
  • Another topic, as approved by your instructor

Create a 10- to 12-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation with accompanying 8-10 minute video that does the following:

  • Summarizes the topic and the effect of the issue on the community
  • Proposes a solution to the issue or a plan of action, including a balanced summary of potential audience responses in order to best persuade everyone to action
  • Includes visual aids and outside resources
  • Uses effective language to persuade your audience

Format your presentation consistent with appropriate course-level APA guidelines, citing any research you use in your powerpoint.

Almost every slide, including the opening one, has a graphic element, such as a photo, cartoon, diagram or chart. Visuals are varied.

Graphic elements are confined within the margins of the slide and do not “bleed” over edges.

Be sure the opening slide has a title, your name, and a date.

10

Did not use full sentences or entire paragraphs on the slides. Instead, bulleted phrases were included.

Consistency, consistency, consistency! Be consistent in all details, from the same style font to headings to colors and layout.

4

Contrast was crisp. Words could easily be read against the background. Did not use a font size smaller than 24 pts. Did not use a serif font (with little feet, such as Times New Roman). They create shadows on a large screen.

Speaker knew material well enough so s/he did not have to refer to notes often. Presentation sounded natural rather than like someone reading.

No filler words were used.

Speaker spoke clearly and at a pace that would be understandable by the audience.

Speaker maintained eye contact.

The speaker was dressed appropriately.

Speaker included a statement of credibility in the opening remarks.

Had an attention-getting introduction. Ended with 1-2 main points the speaker wants the audience to remember.

Research/supporting material was effective, relevant, and credible. Speaker anticipated audience questions, and so presented complete information.

15

Presentation transitioned smoothly from one concept to the next.

Presentation followed correct structure for informative, persuasive, or entertaining speech. For persuasive, speaker addressed arguments from both sides and gave answers to objections.

Used correct spelling on slides and correct grammar when speaking.

Nonverbal delivery, including appropriate gestures, enhanced the effectiveness of the speech. (You will need to back away from the camera so that we can see you from the waist up, including both arms and hands.)
