In the BI practicals, we saw how the Watson Analytics tools interact with data sources to produce
BI dashboards. This practical assignment requires you to demonstrate your understanding of BI
and apply the IBM Watson Analytics skills.

This group assignment topic will be on sports analytics. As a sports analyst, your main task is to
apply Watson Analytics and develop innovative sports analytics with regards to a type of sport of
your choice (e.g. cricket, basketball, soccer, badminton, F1, tennis, etc), and depict insightful info
about the sport, such as winners’ record vs venue, players’ performance by venue, fans’
demographics over time, etc. You may apply either real-world or artificial dataset to illustrate
your approach (the different datasets can be combined too).

Tasks:

1. Develop the relevant BI dashboards, predictive models and social media analytics using
IBM Watson Analytics tool.

2. Justify why these BI solutions could provide insights and why those attributes are laid out
in the fashion you proposed (feel free to include all other relevant justifications).

Note: To ensure that you discuss task (2) properly, you must include visual samples of
the reports you produce (i.e. the screenshots of the BI report/dashboard must be
presented and explained in the written report; use ‘Snipping tool’), and also include any
assumptions that you may have made.

3. The BI report should include: 1) BI dashboards screenshots and commentary, 2) predictive
models, 3) social media findings, 4) overall findings and recommendations, 5) objectives
and benefits of your BI solution, etc. Feel free to make reasonable assumptions or refine
the data as needed. You may create your own artificial datasets. Real-world dataset is not
compulsory. Note: Do refer to the assignment marking rubrics.

Report guidelines
1. The body of the report should contain ‘Table of Content’, logically organised sections, and

‘List of references’.

2. The contribution of each team member must be clearly stated on the Table of Content. E.g.
Introduction (done by Alex Smith).

3. You may include figures, diagrams, tables and charts, etc.

4. For this practical assignment, the length of the assignment includes everything (e.g. Table of
content and References list).

5. Reports should be written in Microsoft Word and submitted as a Word file.

6. Assignments are to be submitted online to the CloudDeakin dropbox (see submission details
below).

Submission Details
The assignments should be submitted as a Word file, called surname1-surname2-surname3 x
(e.g. Smith-Patel-Jones x) and submitted via CloudDeakin (your group’s Dropbox; not individual
one even though if you are allowed to do it individually – so, just join any group number as a sole
member, or else your mark will not be automatically recorded by the group assignment system). It
is worth 40% of your overall mark for this unit.

Also, do include your Team’s Watson login and password detail on the first page on the group
assignment. Assignments with Turnitin index of 10% or more will be reported to Faculty Academic
Misconduct Committee.

Referencing format
You should include any website, journal, or conference papers you have cited in your research
paper as references.

NOTE:
 You MUST produce the actual visuals in IBM Watson Analytics.
 If you think the best presentation above is to use, say, only a pie chart, then discuss

using a pie chart and indicate what the pie chart would show, why you picked the pie
chart, and so on.

 It may be useful to try with various dashboards (i.e. combinations of presentations)
before rushing to conclusion.

Assessment of Assignment
The Marking Rubric should give you an idea of the relative effort you need to apply to each section
of your assignment.

Plagiarism
Plagiarism will cause the grade on any written assignment to be zero (0). Do ensure your Turnitin
similarity index is less than 10%.

Academic Misconduct
Deliberate academic misconduct such as plagiarism is subject to severe penalties. Plagiarism
includes:

 copying words from other students

 re-using assignment material done by other students

 contracting other people to do the assignment, etc.

Extension
No extensions will be considered for this assignment unless a written request (email is fine) is
submitted (and approved by the Unit Chair) at least 48 hours before the due date. Assignments
submitted late without an extension being granted will NOT be marked.

You must keep a backup copy of every assignment you submit, until the marked assignment has
been returned to you. In the unlikely event that one of your assignments is misplaced, you will
need to submit your backup copy.

Any work you submit may be checked by electronic or other means for the purposes of detecting
collusion and/or plagiarism.

When you are required to submit an assignment through your CloudDeakin unit site, you will
receive an email to your Deakin email address confirming that it has been submitted. You should
check that you can see your assignment in the Submissions view of the Assignment dropbox folder
after upload, and check for, and keep, the email receipt for the submission.

Notes

 Penalties for late submission: The following marking penalties will apply if you submit an
assessment task after the due date without an approved extension: 5% will be deducted
from available marks for each day up to five days, and work that is submitted more than five
days after the due date will not be marked. You will receive 0% for the task. ‘Day’ means
working day for paper submissions and calendar day for electronic submissions. The Unit
Chair may refuse to accept a late submission where it is unreasonable or impracticable to
assess the task after the due date.

 Building evidence of your experiences, skills and knowledge (Portfolio) – Building a portfolio
that evidences your skills, knowledge and experience will provide you with a valuable tool to
help you prepare for interviews and to showcase to potential employers. There are a
number of tools that you can use to build a portfolio. You are provided with cloud space
through OneDrive, or through the Portfolio tool in the Cloud Unit Site, but you can use any
storage repository system that you like. Remember that a Portfolio is YOUR tool. You should
be able to store your assessment work, reflections, achievements and artefacts in YOUR
Portfolio. Once you have completed this assessment piece, add it to your personal Portfolio
to use and showcase your learning later, when applying for jobs, or further studies. Curate
your work by adding meaningful tags to your artefacts that describe what the artefact
represents.
