Hunger Games

There are many themes brought forth in the Hunger Games such as love, rebellion, economic inequality, rebellion, sacrifice, among others. These themes are also evident in the world today as individuals and societies go through different circumstances that lead to unavoidable consequences. Every situation that people go through has a consequence depending on how they chose to handle their situations. The characters in the hunger games sacrifice their childhoods and their lives in order to please a totalitarian government. Just as in real world, people make sacrifice when under the control of dictators. These sacrifices lead to tensions that cause uprising and revolution.

When Katniss’s younger sister was randomly picked to represent district 6 in the annual hunger games, this was a clear indication that she would no longer have time to play as a child. In fact, none of the children in all districts had a chance to experience their childhoods, as should be. It was as if they were forced to “grow up” before their time. Sacrificing childhood for entertainment in the Capitol is an unfair way of the elite to please their lavish lifestyles. All the districts have no choice but to sacrifice their children, commonly referred to as tributes in the annual hunger games. Failure to adhere to this ritual means total annihilation by the government. This similar circumstance can be seen today where the poor are forced to give up their children to work for the rich. First, these children are denied their right to enjoy childhood as they are forced into harsh labor at tender ages. The children become domestic employees and in some extreme cases, they are lured into sex slavery. All this to make the rich and affluent happy and comfortable while their childhood experiences are slowly washed away. Their parents know that there is very little they can do to salvage the situation because they too need the barely-enough financial benefit of their children’s labor. In this manner, as these poor children miss out on the joys of being young, children of the elite enjoy their childhoods; an unfair predicament.

Katniss makes a sacrifice for her sister and her community when she volunteers to be a tribute (Collins 26). She would rather die than watch her sister participate in the hunger games. This sacrifice, as is later seen, prompts District 12 and all other districts to fight for their rights against the Capitol. Katniss is seen as the local hero who brought hope to the people. In the real world, there are people who are considered heroes because they led or instigated revolutions and uprisings. Some of these people are Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, among others. These individuals played major roles in changing the world in terms of segregation, discrimination and racism. Their activism led to rebellions from members of their communities and consequently the world at large. In addition, through their selfless sacrifices, African Americans were granted rights of equality.

Katniss and Peeta are willing to sacrifice their lives at the end of the hunger games. As teenagers, they are still too young to die and their willingness to give up their lives stirs uproars in the districts (Collins 27). Both of them do not realize that their actions have caused riots back home. In the real world, many young people sacrifice their lives for the good of their communities. There are those who fight for the rights of the weak in society and this usually means going against the authorities and government. Such stories are common in the media and most times these young individuals get support and attention from the rest of the world
