The plot involves a protagonist named jerry Renault who has to come to an all-boys catholic school named, Trinity school. Jerry has already lost her mother because of cancer and is trying to be normal with the situation. Brother Leon who is Assistant Head Master of Trinity wants to raise school money by chocolate sales. He utilizes Archie Costello, an important member of powerful school group named vigils. Jerry Renault becomes the target as he to refuse chocolate sale for ten consecutive days. It is derived from vigils custom to choose a marble out of five in a vigils box. Jerry never picked black marble which means he will not sale chocolates himself. Jerry continues to deny chocolate sale even after ten days as he thinks this sale is voluntary task and not obligation. Sales go poor and vigils are asked for improvement which they do this in a way that now everybody is involved in chocolate sales. Archie then uses Emile Jana to call Jerry queer and beat him up. Jerry is badly hurt because of the fight. Archie further asks jerry to even up with Emilie in the football field at night. When jerry reaches whole school has arrived to watch the show as they are told there will be a fight. Archie is selling raffle tickets: each boy gets to write how they want Emile or Jerry to hit the other, the winning shot gets one hundred dollars and fifty boxes of chocolate. There is a stating “low punch to the groin for Jerry” Emile attacks Jerry’s groin and then it is all chaos in the crowed, Emile and Jerry fight freely. Jerry is hurt badly. Meanwhile Brother Jacques has turned out the lights to end the fight and Brother Leon comes to rescue jerry. Jerry friend, Goober who is holding jerry to comfort him as ambulance is about to arrive jerry tells him to never stand up for himself because it is not worth it and do whatever they tell you to do. Book reveals many unethical personnel in the society Brother Leon, The Vigils, and Emile all of them who are ready to do anything just to keep their positions of power. Book has raised many questions regarding morality and ethics, how to benefit individual and the group. How we are forced to do immoral things just because of vengefulness, fear, pride and other emotions. The story can be taught in high school in a way to teach students how to fulfil our ethical responsibilities to others and ourselves carefully. The story is to encourage students to think about their own moral codes and identify their best behavior in the society.
