- The Time that Binds: Consider either Machiavelli’s The Prince or the assigned Confucian works. Is this text limited by the particular time and place in which it was written, or can it still be seen as a useful model in our time? Why or why not?
- Ruling the Kingdom, Ruling the Self: In the Confucian works, we find a very clear discussion of how good rule is something that works on multiple levels, from the self to the family to the nation. Looking at the assigned excerpts from Machiavelli, do you think his The Prince could be used in the same way? Could these principles for ruling a city-state well also be applied to ruling oneself well? Discuss at least one principle that you think could work, and one that could not as you give your overall evaluation of the work.

Parabolic shapes in the real worldAccording to Wikipedia, that great internet source of both information and misinformation, “In nature, approximations of parabolas and paraboloids are found in many diverse situations.” Begin by clicking Post New Thread. Make your example of a parabola in real life (Bouncing ball) the subject of your post and then tell us about your parabolic find in at least 250 words. Some of the forum questions require a little research. I would like you to find out about the material and describe the answer in your own words. If you need to do some research to answer a question, you must give attribution to your source. Take the time to cut and paste the URL of the site from which you got the information. Frequently other students become interested in a topic as a result of reading a post. Having a source cited gives them a starting point to do addditional research on their own. Do not just make this up off the top of your head. The St Louis Arch, for example, is NOT a parabola – it is an inverted catenary. Please cite a sourceconfirming that your example is, indeed, parabolic and not some other more exotic curve.
