MATH WRITING ASSIGNMENT

1) Tell me a little about yourself. Write two paragraphs about an experience in your life when you eventually became very good at “something” based solely on the EFFORT and the time you devoted to it.
· What Habits of Mind did you develop to move from “not being able to do it” to becoming “good at doing it”.
· Compare your mindset when you started this activity with your mindset as you achieved your goal.
Interview someone that is already working in the field you are interested in.
Here are some possible questions you can ask:

· Describe your educational background (what school, yrs in school, etc) and your journey to this career.
· Did you have any situations or issues that you had to overcome to get to this position (financial, life challenges, etc), that you would feel comfortable sharing? How did you overcome them?
· How long have you worked in this job?
· What is the most enjoyable or rewarding aspect of your job?
· What are some of the challenges you face in this career?
· How many years do you foresee yourself continuing in this job? Do you see yourself retiring in this career? If not, what’s the next career goal you have?
· 3) Are you satisfied with your midterm grade and your current progress?
· How can you improve these grades?
· What habits of mind are working for you?
· Share the math topics that you have learned in this course and the topics that you need to improve on before the final exam?
· For each of those topics that you need to improve on, name two improvement strategies that you are ready to apply between now and the final exam.

4) Choose one or more mathematical concepts we’ve learned in MAT099 this semester to explain in writing. Then go step-by-step and give a thorough explanation of your chosen topic. Make sure you use some examples and if it’s possible, try to tie it to a real life application or explain why it might be important to master this particular concept.
5) Over the summer a friend emails that he/she has signed up for this class in the fall. He/she asks you what he/she needs to do in order to do well in the course. What would you tell him/her? Share with him/her what worked for you and what would you do differently if you were taking the course again. What life long lessons did you learned?
