Objective |
Research shows that people learn effectively when working on real problems grounded in their own work experience. To this end, our course project is designed to incorporate students’ work experience into the learning process in this course.
The project is an opportunity to explore, in-depth, a topic related to the course objectives (TCOs) that is of significance to you or your organization (current or former).
Summary |
Members of the class are required to prepare an applied research paper, with a minimum of 10 pages but not to exceed 12 pages in length (excluding cover page and appendices), on a specific issue related to leadership or organizational behavior.
Guidelines |
Topic Selection
- Select a specific organization of interest to you and identify a problem at the firm related to organizational behavior (OB).
- Think of yourself as an organizational consultant and assume that a key manager has requested a thorough analysis and recommended course of action to resolve an actual organizational problem that will make a difference to the future performance of the organization.
- Identify which of our TCOs or specific topics in the syllabus are related to the problem you identify.
Research Sources
- All papers must have a minimum of six scholarly sources cited within the text of the paper and identified in the references section.
- Additional research sources can be attached in a bibliography.
- Review the following document for instructions on how to access and use EBSCOhost for your research: EBSCOhost.
Paper Format
- All papers should be single sided, double-spaced, using a 11- or 12-point font.
- Length of the paper to be between 10 and 12 pages, not counting cover page and appendices.
- The first page should include the title of the work, student name, address, telephone and e-mail address, course number, date, and instructor name.
- Follow APA style for general format and citations.
- Paper sections must adhere to the guidelines below and each section must be labeled in the text.
- Language should be clear, concise, and precise.
- Tone should be professional, consistent, and not filled with jargon.
- Grammar and syntax (sentence structure) must be correct.
- Report must be free of misspellings and typos.
Tables and Figures
- All figures and tables must be referred to in your text before they appear on the page.Figures and tables should appear on the same page as or the page after the text that refers to them.
- All figures and tables need captions. Captions go below figures and above tables.
Quotations and Citations
- Quotations and citations are crucial components of a research paper and must be present.
- Failure to properly cite research sources and borrowed ideas is plagiarism.
- Refer to APA style guide for assistance with properly citing quoted and/or borrowed materials and ideas.

Leadership and Organizational Behavior in Action
The organization that will be the topic of discussion in the final project paper is Wal-Mart.
The history of Wal-Mart was created late in the year 1940s, by a common looking retailer Sam Walton. Basically it is a habit as well as practice amongst the retailers that the bargain which they manage to get from its wholesalers from whom they purchase goods are kept by them in their pockets as because they do not alter the price of the product and hence the extra money goes into their pocket but Walton did something different and did not followed this theory, as he never wanted to be a part of the crowd. Carlson Tucker, “Wal-Mart: Good or Bad for America?” states that the Wal-Mart has contributed a lot for the economy of America and it is alone responsible for productivity gain since 1995-1997.
He was looking for his separate identity so the extra money which he saved from bargain or rather which he saved was passed on to the consumers or the customers itself through volume and from here the story of the Wal-Mart began, and history was created in the business world and a new business strategy was being introduced in the business to lure customers. Wal-Mart is a multinational retail company that changed the economy of America and it has satisfied the consumers by offering those many products under one roof that too at reasonable price.
As the Organization grew over the time the staffs and the employees of the Organization grew over the time period. So, with increase in the staff and employees there are various problems that the organization is facing in its behavior. No doubt the work culture of Wal-Mart is very good but it faces many problems in the organizational behavior. The problem that organization faces is employees Issues and team problem.
There are many conflicts basically personality conflict, issues with the supervisors and orientation with the organization. The inefficient and improper communication in the organization causes inefficient operations in the Organization.
The team has to work in group and they must work together to achieve predetermined goals of the Organization. However, the supercenter of Wal-Mart is increasing in all the countries. Sometimes, the team of Wal-Mart is becoming non-functional and because of this issue the organization and its management is facing communication problem. And so the organization is not efficiently carrying out its operations properly.
Preliminary Problem Statement
Wal-Mart has the top priority of satisfying their customers and providing them with quality goods at reasonable price. I feel that Wal-Mart has capability to excel and hence the effort on employee’s issues and team spirit should be given preferences. If this is not controlled then I am afraid the company’s morale would keep on declining and the organization will not prosper effectively. I would research what is required to turn a company and look at examples of other companies who have made the transformations and reach the zenith point.
