This assignment should be completed in pairs. You and your partner will first submit a proposal
outline and complete a formal analytical report incorporating your TA’s feedback on your
proposal.

Tasks Due Date
Proposal Outline – 15% Wednesday, October 2 by 11:00 p.m.
Formal Analytical Report – 25% Wednesday, November 20 by 11:00 p.m.

In the formal analytical report, you and your partner will make a recommendation to a company
on an important decision relating to a new technology or technical process. Choose an industry
or field that interests you! It might be beneficial to choose the field you plan on getting into or is
related to your degree. Briefly research the tools and processes created or used by that
industry, especially those that are cutting-edge and not yet widely used. Choose one for your
major assignment. Use your imagination to develop a scenario that necessitates the analysis of
your chosen technology or technical process. That is, identify a private or public organization
and your position within that organization. A recent graduate may actually be asked/ask to
complete a formal analytical report, so keep yourself in a junior position. Describe a situation
that demands action (e.g. your company is losing market share, a piece of equipment is causing
accidents or inefficiencies, a new technology has been developed that could benefit your
organization, the organization and communication within an organization is hindering
employees’ ability to solve problems quickly, etc.).

You are free to be as creative as you want with this. Your organization could be a huge multi-
national or a small start-up. It can be a manufacturing company or a public research enterprise.
It can be an organization considering a new type of “green” building or an electrical contractor
considering field laptops. It can be a maker of snowboards considering a new design or a
performance venue considering new kinds of music-related technologies. It can be a security
organization upgrading tools or procedures. It can be a health facility struggling to change the
physical layout to reduce disease transmission among patients. Whatever you choose, I
strongly recommend that it is: 1) Interesting to you; and/or 2) Might be useful in building your
portfolio for professional employment. You will get out of this course only what you put in.

Whatever scenario you devise, and technology or process you choose, keep in mind that it
MUST be sufficiently complex so you have enough material to complete the formal analytical
report.

Some examples of projects, in addition to those indicated above, include:

 The adoption by the City of Oshawa of a fleet of cars or buses that use alternative-fuels

 Standardization of software/hardware across your company

 Different waste disposal methods (landfill vs. incineration vs. gasification)

 Pandemic management/prevention

 Electronic books replacing hardcopies in post-secondary institutions

 A craft that could sustain human life on a trip to Mars

 Using “biosolids” (a euphemism for human waste) in agriculture

Please note: These examples are NOT a list from which you must choose. They are just ideas
to get you thinking. Keep in mind that these ideas are general, and your scenario should be
substantially more specific.

Proposal Outline

Description

You and your partner will create a proposal that will identify the:

 Company background

 Problem in your company

 Possible options to resolve the problem

 Estimated staffing, timeline, and budget needs to complete the analytical report (if
approved)

 Request for authorization to complete the analytical report.

Remember, you and your partner are seeking approval to analyze and recommend superior
options. The proposal outline will not make a recommendation. Your proposal outline should be
written as if you and your partner are currently working in the company you have chosen. It
should provide your workplace supervisor (use your TA’s name) with a clear sense of the
purpose, direction, and content of the proposed analytical report. You are encouraged to identify
possible options in the proposal, but will not actually make a recommendation in the proposal,
as you would need to conduct research before you make this determination.

The outline of your proposal should be 250 words in length written in paragraph-form. Any
information that is presented in a visual format does not count in the 250 words. For example,
you should be using charts, tables, images, and so forth, to help explain your ideas. Please
review the rubric carefully.

Citations
You must use a minimum of two academic sources from the options below:

 One book

 One academic journal article (electronic or print)

 One reliable website (not Wikipedia or similar sites)

 One newspaper or magazine article (the article should be fairly substantial in length and
content)

Note: Wikipedia may be a great place to start to get general ideas, but it is certainly only the
beginning of the research process, rather than the end. You need to seek out academic sources
for your research. You are encouraged to use more than two sources.

Formal Analytical Report

Description

Develop a formal analysis of a particular technology or technical process. Your report should
provide recommendations based on a comprehensive analysis (e.g., function, ease of use,
impact on the environment, economic impact, organization impact, etc.). You need to first
present evidence on the pros and cons of your chosen technology or process in relation to
current practices and alternatives. Then make a case for or against its adoption by your
particular organization in the form of recommendations.

In this scenario, you and your partner are helping your boss or supervisor to make a decision
regarding the merits of the technology and whether it should be adopted by your organization.
You are the expert on the technology, but you must make your case in a way that a non-expert
and non-engineer (your supervisor and others in your “audience”) can understand.

Your report should be 1,750-2,000 words in length. Word count does not include your “front
matter” (e.g. title page, table of contents) or your “back matter” (e.g. bibliography and
appendices). Please review the rubric carefully.

Citations

The bibliography will be a list of the sources you used in your research. You MUST properly cite
in the text where you use your sources. You must use a minimum of five sources, including the

following:

 One book
 One academic journal article (electronic or print)

 One reliable website

Problem statement:In developing countries, infrastructure especially in the roadtransport sector is not fully developed. During rainy seasons movement from one place to another becomes a serious problem which in return impacts negatively on the economies of the countries. Again, in various parts of the world safety earthquakes and cases of emergencies such as terrorism poses a serious threat to human kind safety. These situations are of grave concern and they need to be resolved with urgency. This project is an innovative idea which seeks to provide a solution to mass, reliable and safe eviction of people and property in cases of emergency where applicable by the fabrication of a simplehydraulic robot arm bridge.

Measure of success:Since this is a proposal leading to the design and fabrication of working prototype, the prototype must work during testing.

This is a proposed mechanical engineering project in which, as a team, would like to propose some design and manufacture of hydraulically powered, and a simple to manipulate robot arm bridge, to the JCB Company of the UK. The company designs and manufactures earth movers and other heavy commercial vehicles intended for agricultural purposes and the military. This is a proposed mechanical engineering project, in which we propose the design and manufacture of hydraulically powered, and a simple to manipulate robot Arm Bridge, and the EVAC vehicle to the JCB Company of the UK. The company designs and manufactures heavy commercial vehicles and earth movers for agriculture and the military. This shall be new products in their manufacturing line which shall serve to realize fast and reliable mass rescue of victims during emergencies. The project intent to combine a hydraulic robot arm having all the features and types of a typical robot arm, a retractable structure similar to a road bride to give a compound gadget and that can be incorporated / carried at the back of heavy commercial equipment such as a pathfinder. The EVAC will be more of a difficult option because of its multi-purpose vehicle that works on both land and air. This machine will be massive and light that can carry up to 200-300 citizens during emergencies. We want to mass produce any of this machinery that will greatly benefit Great Britain when faced with natural disasters.
