Tree planting is eco-tourism based and should prove to be a relatively easy essay to write. Is this approved or do you need more information?

Introduction

The point of all persuasive writing (perhaps even all writing in general) is to change how readers view the world around them or elements of the world. This may involve a change of opinions, attitudes, beliefs, or behaviour. Positive persuasion is aimed at getting readers to begin or continue doing or thinking something, while negative persuasion is aimed at stopping or ending such thinking or behaviour.

There are three major elements that are relevant to persuasion. The classical names for these elements are logos, ethos, and pathos.

Logos
is the classical name for reasonable evidence that prompts an audience to change in some way. By contrast (though in actual practice evidence often overlaps the three major categories),
ethos
names those claims that cause us to believe the authority or credibility of the writers or their sources of information. Finally,
pathos
is information that arouses our emotions in some way that would cause us to change our beliefs or behaviour.

In this assignment, you will write a short essay[footnoteRef:1] in which you persuade your readers concerning your stance on an issue that you and your course instructor have agreed upon. The reason this assignment is not specified concerning audience or topic is that various students and instructors may have varieties of topics they would prefer to consider. For example if you are specializing in a particular field of study (say, philosophy or business), you may want to pick an issue relevant to that field of study. Also, the issue you pick may have ethical implications or may be ‘merely informative’ where the information you have may not be widely known. Prescriptive persuasion is addressed toward changing behaviour; persuasion that is merely informative makes readers aware of what they may not have known before, but stops short of advising changes of behaviour. [1: Such essays are sometimes called ‘five-paragraph essays’ though the actual number of paragraphs is not a key focus or requirement.]

There are several topics that have been approved for discussion in previous classes of this sort.

· Social media tools that should be widely used by respiratory therapists[footnoteRef:2] [2: Students in other areas may want to apply this topic to their own fields of study/]

· Why minority governments are better than majority ones

· How agriculture affects carbon emission statistics

· What you should know about managing your debt

Instructions

During Unit Six, you will propose an issue for this essay and receive approval from the course instructor.

By the end of the unit, you will plan, write, edit, and submit a short original essay (no more than 600 words), in which you argue for a stance regarding an issue. Your essay must have careful discussion in which you establish credibility and appeal to the reasoning and concern of readers for the issue. You must articulate your ideas clearly, and your essay must be well organized overall and in terms of the individual paragraphs of the essay. Your work must also be very carefully edited.
