Class Journal 2. This journal is designed to help you synthesize the content of the class lectures and
also provide me with feedback. The journal is due at the beginning of class on Tuesday, October 8.
Week 4 The National Literature (part 2)
Tue Sep 17. Re-read the creation stories in Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 carefully. In what ways are Elohim
(God) and Yahweh Elohim (the Lord God) portrayed differently in these two stories? Discuss which of
these creation stories fits best with the national literature and why.
Thu Sep 19. Re-read Hosea chapters 1 and 3. Explain why Hosea was commanded to marry a whore.
Do you think that he actually did this as a “visual” prophecy or that it is simply a story?
Minute Summary. What idea did you find most interesting this week?
Week 5 The Assyrian Crisis
Tue Sep 24. Re-read the famous “Immanuel” prophecy in Isaiah 7:10-17 closely. Discuss what the
prophecy means for King Ahaz in the context of the Syro-Ephraimite war. Specifically, how is the child a
sign and when is he expected to be born?
Thu Sep 26. Re-read the story of Sennacherib’s siege of Jerusalem in 2 Kgs 18:13-19:37. First, explain
why scholars divide these chapters into an A, B1, and B2 version. Specifically, what evidence is there for
a doublet? Second, discuss how the A and B versions differ in their characterization of Hezekiah. Why
might this be?
Minute Summary. Write one sentence that summarizes the main theme for the week.
Week 6 The Deuteronomist Reform
Tue Oct 1. Re-read the Passover regulations in Exodus 12:1-14 and Deuteronomy 16:1-8. Describe how
Deuteronomy reforms and updates the version found in Exodus. Discuss how these changes help
support Josiah’s national reforms in the face of the Assyrian crisis. Specifically, what does Josiah gain
from reviving the Passover?
Thu Oct 3. Re-read the events leading to the fall of Jerusalem in 2 Kings 20-25. Look for places where
the narrator attempts to explain why Jerusalem fell despite the apparent success of the Deuteronomist
reform under Josiah. Why do you think that 2 Kings 25 ends abruptly without a lengthy commentary like
we found in 2 Kings 17 after the fall of the Northern Kingdom?
Minute Summary. What idea did you find most confusing this week?
