This option will focus upon information presented within Chapter 8 of our textbook. If you choose this assignment, I would like you to first view the very fascinating 40-minute video produced by ABC’s 20/20, entitled “Inside the World of Childhood Schizophrenia”. I have included a link to this video within the resources tab of this week’s learning module. The program documents the experiences of 3 schizophrenic children and their families as they attempt to get through daily life. My hope is that, by watching this video, you can get an “up close and personal” view of at least one type serious emotional disorder, although many of the issues facing these families would also potentially apply to families of people with other types of disorders.

After you have watched read Chapter 8 and watched the entire video, I would like you first tell me (in general) what you have learned about the diagnosis of Emotional and Behavioral Disorders (EBD)and the factors surrounding identification and treatment of this type of disability. Next, I’d like you to tie in your impressions and reactions to the 20/20 as related to what you learned about EBD within Chapter 8. For example, what challenges did you notice that are faced by these children within both the home and school settings? Did anything surprise you about this disorder and its symptoms? What do you think about how the parents are addressing their children’s problems? Do you have any comments about the emotional impact that having this disorder within the family is affecting individual members and/or their relationships? What about the impact upon other life areas (e.g., social life, personal safety, finances, employment, education, etc.)? As a parent, what do you think you might do to get through daily life in this situation? Do you think you could handle this? What do you think will happen to these girls in the future? You can do a little supplemental internet research on the issues facing kids with either the general category of EBD or childhood schizophrenia in particular if you would like.
Regardless of which option you choose, your final product should be about 3 pages in length and should include a typical (easily read) font and double-spacing of lines. Don’t forget to put your name and the week number on your papers! Again, please use your own thoughts and words as much as possible. I am interested in what YOU think. If you do refer to work from other authors (including the authors of our textbook), please include appropriate citations and a reference list using APA style.
