Topic: Key statement that describes the topic of your essay.
General Purpose: To inform
Thesis: The central idea of your paper (one complete sentence that tells your
main idea and general reasoning behind that). You may change this as you go through the writing process.

A. Attention Getter: Something that grabs the attention of the audience.
Examples of this: startling statistics, stories, quotations, scenarios, etc.
B. Reason to Read: Why should the audience listen to your view.
C. Thesis Statement: Rephrase same statement as above. You are putting it here so you know that it belongs around the last line of the first paragraph of the essay.
II. Credibility and Background
A. Describe what personally connects you to this topic.
B. Discuss the type of research have you done to establish credibility. Name sources, be specific.
C. Discuss any additional research you plan to do or holes in the work.
III. Content
A. Statement of the first main point or idea.
1. Idea of development or support for the first main point.
a. Support material (ex: statistics, paraphrase, etc.- cite source).
b. Support material (ex: statistics, paraphrase, etc. – cite source).
2. Any additional details or elaboration on this concept.
B. Statement of second main point.
