“The Market Analysis Tool that we are hoping to develop would be to help our

partner NGOs and youth workers identify youth business opportunities in the

local market. The tool would ideally help local youth workers train

individual youth in their small business ventures.

For this Street Kids Project I ideally see two components:

1. Country / Regional Market Analysis Tool – with case studies of Liberia,

India and Tanzania

– A tool for Street Kids and Partner NGOs to look at economic indicators and

specific business sectors which youth could engage in.  Starting at a macro

level and funnelling down to region or city-specific to identify formal and

informal business sectors and value chains

– Would provide examples of what a small business venture would look like

for an at-risk, street-involved youth

2.  Market Research Tools for Youth Workers to Run with Youth

– Participatory activities and workshops to uncover market opportunities in

the region

– Teach youth about value chains and allow them to identify value chains in

different business sectors (informal and formal)”

For projects concerning “Street Kids”, it is imperative to understand the roots of this issue in the local market and how globalization has influenced the country’s private and public sectors, which can potentially impact the country as a whole not just the youth.

I think my team should determine an effective strategy that can encourage youth to engage in educational activities, by conveying incentives such as work placement in different sectors that constitute the country’s productivity (agriculture, manufacturing, mining etc…).  We should encourage involvement of different stakeholders by soliciting their opinions through surveys and focus groups. This would help to understand the different needs of local communities, as it will translate accountability of all parties involved in improving the lives of many youth. Using secondary research will also help us understand the country’s social tendencies, facilitating us to use a customize approach based on: culture, capacity building and accessibility of resources in Tanzania.

I would suggest that we formulate different programs geared toward groups of kids (young individuals leaving in the slums or in the streets) that share common interest. Then create a framework that will allow my team to develop platforms that will support these groups’ capacity to achieve their goals based on each participants’ contribution.  Whether it is art or entrepreneurial activities, the entities that want to use our “market analysis tool” should demonstrate that they have the proper resources and strong ability to guide the youth in the right direction. Lastly, we need to come up with a retention program that will prevent relapses, brain drain or new cases of juvenile delinquency and low morale.
