I-Search Project

Winter 2012

The I-Search Project will allow you to explore a variety of resources for doing reports, writing papers or generally increasing your knowledge of a subject. The project will include the following steps:

1.
Choose a Topic: You should choose a topic that relates to your area of study or possible future career.

2.
What I already know:
Write 1-2 paragraphs about your knowledge and experience of the topic and why you are interested in it.

3.
What I want to find out:
Write a paragraph about things you would like to find out about this career. You will use these questions as the basis of your “research.”

4.
The Search:
Find 3 different information sources for your topic. This may include books, magazines, newspapers, websites, videos, or resource people. Make sure you have 3 different forms of information. For instance, you might have one book, one website and one video on your topic. The EvCC librarians can help you explore resources. Once you have found these sources, write 1-2 paragraphs summarizing what you discovered from each source.. Be sure to put information in your own words!

5.
What I Learned:
Write a conclusion paragraph about what you learned from the whole search. Focus on the questions you had at the beginning. Did you find the answers? Do you need to do more research? What new questions came up?

6.
Bibliography:
Cite your sources in MLA format.

Please type your paper in 12 point font with 1 inch margins. Your project will probably be 2-4 pages at most. If it is less than 2 pages, you may have left something out. If it is longer than 4 pages, you’ve done too much!

Group Discussion: Be prepared to talk to a small group about your topic, the resources you used and what you learned. The I-Search Project is worth 70 points (you must be present to earn the discussion points).
