Sensory Perceptions

Human beings could be called as most developed organisms in terms of development of all of their systems such as, respiratory system, digestive system as well as nervous system. So, it could also be boasted that we are most developed in terms of sensory system too. But, that could not be fact as; there are organisms which have more advanced senses in compare to us.

For instance, a dog can smell the danger from a considerable distance. If we leave this perfection in terms of comparison even, then we cant say confidently that what we diagnose via our senses is accurate. (1)

For instance, there are five senses present in human body which are related to visibility, hearing, taste, smell and recognition of touch. Their functions are performed with the help of receptors which are present in the human bodys parts such as; eyes, ears, tongue, nose as well as skin respectively.(2)

A sixth sense is also being claimed to be present in humans but researchers are puzzled even up to today about its existence. Now, if we observe the power of our senses then we could realize that there are reasons to accept their accuracy as well as reject it. For instance, if we take the power of visibility provided by our eyes then we cannot say that we cant see the things (except blinds). (3) Definitely we might see them, but, sometimes we feel that we have seen a thing but, it might not be a reality. For instance, people say I saw you in the market. But, get puzzled when other person replied that he did not go to the market at that time. This indicates towards inaccuracy of our senses. (1)

Besides, we often take the imaginary things as real one. For instance, a person in dark understands that rope is actually snake. In the same way, we often confuse the touch of an object with other. (3)

All these facts indicate towards the inaccuracy of sensory information which is mainly due to our blurred memory which plays the most important role in processing of sensory information. But, its not the case always; up to a limitation our senses might be considered accurate too. For instance we might differentiate our known persons from strangers; we take our hand away from the warm objects as well as we could recognize the voice of our friend. All of these are possible due to our sensory information. (2) The major contributing factors regarding this are; our intelligence level, concentration and repulsion of imaginary thoughts from filling the gaps in memory.

We might also say that its not always senses which are related to accuracy or inaccuracy but it might be due to nature v/s nurture phenomenon. For instance, a persons capability to process the things as well as interpret them might be inherent by nature or may be learnt via experience. For instance, a child may recognize the touch of its mother, it is nature, but, being shocked via watching a criminal is nurture. (1)
