Physics 1800-01, Class Project 1, Recent Research Paper On Specific Solar System Topic
Format
1. Length should be 3-5 typed pages, double spaced.
2. Cover page and reference page should be added.
3. Topic should relate to the solar system, but specific in scope and not be a main topic in the text book or lecture. You should confirm your topic with the professor by 7-14-13. You should prepare an outline (using suggested format) and submit it together with a draft of your paper by 7-21-13.
4.
The paper should focus on recent research (last 15-20 years) related to your topic.
5.
5 references minimum, from websites, journals, books, magazines and technical sources. Please use high quality websites, such as NASA, Jet Propulsion Laboratory and/or Goddard Space Flight Center etc.
6. The type of paper could be a summary of recent research, recent discoveries, or comparison and contrast of different scientific techniques.
7. APA citation style should be used for the reference page only. Use the strict website citation style including maximum information displayed in reference page citations.
8. Draft version grading will be based on title pate, reference page, APA citation style of reference page, reference quality, outline, paper format, and recent research content.
9. Final version grading will be based on title page, reference page, APA citation style of reference page, reference quality, paper format, solar system specific content, recent research content, and the overall quality.
10. 20% of the grade will be determined by the submission of a draft outline and draft version of the research paper, both due on 7-21-13.
11. The completed paper must be submitted by you through Turnitin available on Blackboard.
12. Due date for the final version of the research paper is 8-4-13.
A Scientific Paper Describing Recent Research On a Specific Topic
Title
[Every paper should have a title that indicates the topic to the reader]
Use the headings below (
Introduction
,
Methods and Materials
,
Results and Discussion
, and
Conclusion
) to separate the sections of your paper.
Introduction
All scientific reports begin with an introduction of some type, no matter what structure is followed in the rest of the paper. This paper should summarize recent research on a specific scientific topic related to this course. This is where you explain your paper objectives, argue that the subject is important, and describe the recent work in the context of previous research. You can describe the state of knowledge that motivated
the research in the first place.
Methods and Materials
This section describes the methods and materials used in the research being summarized. The description should include the research setup, equipment, laboratory and/or field procedures) and how the data were analyzed. This section will vary depending on the type of research to be described. The types of calculations used, such as the laws of physics which apply and why. If you describe experiments that you’ve read about in other sources, please focus on the technical aspects and provide citations. This section is a good place to describe details of the equipment used, such as detectors or measuring instruments and their precision. If your research topic is theoretical or uses simulations, then the calculation techniques should be described.
Results and Discussion
In this section, you summarize the data from relevant experiments and indicate the important results that the data supports. What conclusions can be made from the information you have gathered? Did the information you gathered support or refute the original hypothesis? If you have any data tables, equations or phenomenological relations that support your understanding, you can refer to these and attach them in an Appendix at the end of your paper.
Present a brief summary of the decisive findings and tentative conclusions. Whereas the introduction section introduces the research question and reviews the state of knowledge in the field that motivated the question, the discussion section explains how the research broadens the knowledge. How precise are the theoretical predictions and/or the data?
How close do the theory and predictions fit with the actual data measured?
Conclusion
What research questions remain? This section could also include examination of other evidence supporting or contradicting the tentative conclusions.
References
This section documents the sources that provided you with information used in the paper. References should be listed alphabetically by last name on a separate page at the end of the paper using the APA documentation system.
Class Project 1, Recent Research Paper Announcement
Posted on: Sunday, July 7, 2013
Sunday 7-7-13
Hello to all of you,
Project 1, a recent research paper on a specific solar system topic requires picking a topic (due 7-14-13), a draft paper including an outline and a final version of the paper including an outline.
The draft (including outline) is due Sunday 7-21-13 and the final version of your recent research paper is due on 8-4-13. The professor will take one week to grade each version of your paper. The draft and final versions of your paper should include an outline, title page, 3-5 page typed paper, and reference page, all in one document submitted through Turnitin via the course materials section of blackboard. Please make sure to email the topic that you have chosen to the professor by Sunday 7-14-13, using your course number in the subject line of your email. Please make and submit a brief outline using bullet items and the sections suggested in the outline format. The paper should be correlated to the outline. You will be allowed to submit multiple versions of the draft and final versions, once every 24 hours before the due dates. The similarity checks done by Turnitin do not include 1% matches with various sources and websites. The research paper should be based on recent research related to a specific solar system topic. I have posted in the course materials section, the paper requirements, outline and format requirements, suggested topics and the APA citation style requirements. You should emphasize the methods and materials section describing the methods and materials used by the researchers doing the research being described and the results and discussion section describing the research. If you want help, please make an appointment for office hours.
