THIS IS THE ASSIGNMENT
Plz respond to what the students had to say about the assignment
All of us have witnessed problem behavior in a variety of settings. Many people are familiar with this situation in the checkout line at the grocery store!
A four-year-old child walks to the checkout line with her mother and asks, “Mommy, can I have some candy?” Mom, says, “No, it is almost dinner time.” The child proceeds to scream, cry, and kick for several minutes. Mom then gives in and buys her the candy. The little girl quits crying and happily eats the candy.
Using the A-B-C’s of Behavior you learned in this week’s Web Resources, analyze this situation and discuss what you hypothesize is happening. Thoroughly explain your reasoning in order to defend your answer.
You need to specifically discuss:
What is the antecedent (A) of the behavior?
Address any “setting” events affected the antecedent, and if so how.
What is the behavior (B) under study in objective, measureable terms?
What is the consequence (C) that is maintaining the behavior?
What is your hypothesized function of the behavior (e.g., what is the child trying to GET or ESCAPE from)? Support your hypothesis.
When responding to classmates, be sure to give specific feedback as to why you either agree or disagree with your classmate’s analysis of the situation.

The antecedent of the behavior I hypothesis is when the mother says “No, it is almost dinner time”. I believe the setting of being around the candy affects the antecedent. Corporations have conducted research into adding food and other items to the register, and the effectiveness if the customer will buy those items. Stores do this to parents on purpose! The child is obviously hungry, and the candy is right in front of her.
The behavior is screaming, crying, and kicking for several minutes. The consequence is the mother gives in, buys her candy, and allows her to eat it before dinner. This negative reinforcement has just increased the intensity and duration of the next temper tantrum (Mueller, Jenson, Reavis, and Andrews, 2002). My hypothesized function of the behavior is that the child is trying to get out of eating dinner. Too often parents deal with picky eaters, if I were to interview the mother or father about the child’s eating habits this would probably serve to be true. The mother is probably stressed from work, shopping, taking care of the child, and day after day trying to get her to eat her dinner. Mueller, Jenson, Reavis and Andrews (2002), stress the importance of replacing the undesired behavior for an acceptable one. If my hypothesis is correct, the undesired behavior will need to be dealt with in multiple environments. The end goal is to teach the child an acceptable behavior that serves the same function (Mueller, Jenson, Reavis, and Andrews, 2002). The behavioral excess to be decreased is the screaming, crying, and kicking. In this scenario I believe the mother should have stuck to her original answer. When the child first started to exhibit the behavior the mother should have told the child to stop, and if he/she did not they were going to lose a privilege for the night.
Mueller, F., Jenson, W., Reavis, K., & Andrews, D. (2002). Functional assessment of behavior can be as easy as a-b-c. Beyond Behavior.

(A) Antecedent: The four year old child walks to the checkout line. The child sees the candy and asks for the candy.
The four year old asks the mother for some candy and the mother say no.
(B) Behavior: The four year old cry’s, screams, kicks, and for several minutes. This behavior probably annoyed the mother by being embarrassed in public. The mom may be a mother who can’t see her child crying.
(C) Consequence: The child’s mom buys her the candy and she stops crying, screaming, and kicking. Giving the child the candy only rewarded the child for her behavior. This indeed will make the child act out every time she asks for something and her mom says no. So now she thinks that she can scream, kick, and cry when her mother tells her no. She can basically get her way when she is told no.
My hypothesis is that the child wanted some candy. The mom said no and the child would cry and have behaviors until the mom gave in. The mom indeed did.
I think the child knew if she behaved that her mom would give in. This is probably a reoccurring issue that the mom and child have.
Choose two of the poems here for your analysis, or you may also use Poets.org,
http://poets.org/
, to search for other poems, or review the resources in this week’s My Humanities Kit.
In your response to question two, identify the two poems selected, and provide the consulted source links to both poems. List the titles and authors of the two poems you chose to analyze. Research the authors to learn a bit about their lives. Discuss them one at a time. Include the reading material and links to the poems in your response; incorporate APA formatting.
In your response, consider the following:
1. Was the poem difficult to understand?
2. How did you interpret it?
3. What do you think is the idea of the poem beyond the descriptions?
4. What does the biographical information add to an understanding of the poem?

The first poem I chose to analyze is called Let America be America Again by Langston Hughes. I found the poem to be very well written and I liked it very much. I also feel that it is a very relevant poem for America’s current condition. Mr. Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri in 1902. His poems are written from a minority point of view. His word usage is phenomenal and his message profound. I found the poem to be very easy to read and understand. My interpretation is that he wants America to be how it used to be. A great land of freedom and hope before it became industrialized. I think he was also describing how many people view the lack of opportunities in a land that is known for freedom for all. The biographic information leads me to believe that he was a strong man who worked hard to preserve the voice of the minorities and underprivileged.
The second poem I chose to analyze was Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost. This has probably been one of my favorite poems of all time. I believe it is about how nothing new can stay new forever, whether it is a relationship, or something tangible like a new toy. Everything gets old after a while. I believe it is up to the person to find new ways to keep it new and exciting so that it does not die. Robert frost lived in New England for a time and he was known for writing about the scenery there. I believe this had a huge impact on this poem.

A Happy Birthday by Ted Koosner
I don’t think the poem was too difficult to understand but I’ve never really been into poetry and interpreting it is normally pretty hard. I could be way off course with the interpretation, but I think it means his idea of a happy day is being one with the day and night and lost in a good book. He wanted to soak every last ounce of the day as it faded into night. Ted Kooser was born April 25, 1939 in Iowa. He won numerous awards for his literary pieces. He worked as an executive in the insurance business. Reading his biography did not help to interpret the poem. Source: Kooser, Ted. A Happy Birthday. Retrieved from

Public Transportation by Elaine Sexton
This poem was a little more difficult to understand. It seemed to have a lot of different things going on. I think it’s about how there are many different types of people on a bus or using public transportation. No one can be judged or “figured out”. They all hold their secrets about their lives. No one is actually what they seem on the outside. Elaine Sexton is the author of “Sleuth”, a collection of poems. Reading about her did not help to interpret the poem. Source: Sexton, Elaine.
