Assignment for Chapter Four – Listening

Due Tuesday, 07/23/13 in class

Complete each of the following assignments, labeling each part as indicated. Remember, I’m looking to see that you’ve made connections and understand the material, so take your time and thoroughly discuss each answer.

Part One: Listening vs. Hearing

Using personal examples, explain the difference between listening and hearing. Do you consider yourself a good listener? Why or why not?

Part Two: Analyzing Your Listening Preference/Style (Explain each answer thoroughly)

1. Under most circumstances, would you say that you are an active or a passive communicator? In what situations would you consider yourself to be a passive communicator and why? In what situations are you most active and why? Would others agree?

2. Do you think you are good at decoding others’ verbal and nonverbal messages? Why or why not?

3. Overall, what do you think your dominant listening style is, and how do you think it affects your relationships? NOTE: if you have trouble choosing between two, you can discuss both.

Part Three: Identifying Listening Barriers

(Explain all answers thoroughly)

The authors address several barriers to effective listening including environmental factors, multitasking, overconfidence, etc. What do you consider your most severe problem? Why? Identify and discuss two areas that you feel need the most improvement. What steps should you take to overcome these barriers? (Go beyond superficial answers such as “focus more.”)

Part Four – Your Listening Skills

How do
you
think the following people would rate you as a listener (on a scale from 0 to 100)?

1. Your best friend

2. Your boss

3. Your teacher

4. Your co-worker or fellow student

5. Your parents or your spouse

After you have rated yourself, go to each person and ask him or her to rate you on a scale of 0-100 (without telling them your own ratings). Also, ask them to list two of the faulty listening behaviors that you use the most—or problems you seem to have when listening. Compare the ratings and discuss the results in at least two paragraphs. (If you don’t have one of the “roles” or relationships listed, please choose a comparable person to ask).
