Section 1: Advocacy Issue in Early Childhood (1—2 paragraphs per question; 2—3 pages total)

  • Explain your selected advocacy issue and the goals and outcomes you want to achieve through your advocacy plan.

    Respond to each of the following questions to develop a detailed explanation of your advocacy issue and goals:

    What is the issue you are advocating for?
    Why is your issue important to the early childhood community?
    Why is your issue important to you?
    What is the specific problem you are going to address in your plan?
    What is the specific goal?
    What is the aim of your advocacy plan? State what you want to achieve based upon your vision for change in the early childhood field.
    Where is your plan being implemented?

Note: You are required to implement one of the action steps in the Advocacy Plan to complete this Assessment.

Section 2: Resource Analysis and Synthesis (2—3 pages)

  • Select at least three current resources that provide multiple perspectives on the issue you selected.
  • Then, complete the following:

    Identify each resource, including the APA citation.
    Write a 1- to 2-paragraph summary for each resource.
    Analyze the resources and write a 2- to 3-paragraph synthesis of your findings.

Note: When selecting resources, look for resources that explore the root causes of the problem, and describe the current policy or state of the issue. Pay particular attention to any solutions found in the research or suggested “next steps” in addressing the issue.

Section 3: Advocacy Plan (1—2 pages)

  • Respond to the following prompts:

    What is your goal for your Advocacy Plan?  (1 paragraph)
    What is your goal statement? (1 sentence)
    How does your goal help or improve your selected issue? (1—2 paragraphs)

  • Then, complete the following sections of the “Advocacy Plan: Action Steps Chart:”

    Objective: What do you want to accomplish?
    Action Steps: How will your objective be accomplished?
    Collaborator: Who will assist you?
    Resources: What resources do you need?
    Timeline: What is the timeline?
    Assessment: How will you assess your progress?
    Outcome: How will you know you have met your objective?

Section 4: Implementation and Reflection (1—2 pages)

  • Implement one of the action steps in your Advocacy Plan.
  • Then, write a 1- to 2-page reflection that explains the following:

    Your advocacy process, and how you implemented one of the action steps in your Advocacy Plan.
    How you collaborated with others to achieve your objective.
    The result of your action step implementation, and how it did or will lead to positive social change for children, families, and/or the early childhood profession.
    Your “lessons learned,” and how you might change your plan for advocacy the next time you develop an Advocacy Plan.
