2) The trixbox server is the means through which all of the phones can communicate and store their information. The trixbox version is 2.8.0.3 and is installed on the Dell Power Edge 1750 server. 1. Make sure that the server is set up to boot from disk.

2. Set the burned disk inside the CD-ROM drive and reboot the server.

3. You should see the following screen. Press enter when you are ready and remember that it will format the whole drive.

Lab: Enabling Voice Mail

To enable voice mail got to the “Add an Extension” Trixbox Screen. If needed, please review lab: Configuring Extensions. The steps are:

· Open Mozilla Firefox Browser

· Enter Trixbox IP Address 192.168.1.3

· Enter admin mode

· Choose PBX

· Choose PBX Settings

· Under Basic click extensions

You should now be at the “Add an extension”.

On the right menu click on the extension you wish to add a voice mail. In this example we will edit Jane Doe.

You can see there is not an edit button. On this screen, you simply change the settings you want to change and click on “Submit” at the bottom of the screen and your changes will be saved.

Scroll down to “Voicemail & Directory”.

Click Status to enable

Set the voice mail password. For simplicity, it is suggested to use the same password as the extension. In an active environment this would be a random choice.

Scroll down to the bottom and click “submit”.

Scroll back to the top and click “Apply Configuration Changes”.

Note: Makes sure that both the “submit” button and then the “apply configuration changes” button are clicked in order. Otherwise, the changes will not be applied.

You have enabled voice mail.

Lab: Configuring Audio Codecs

X-Lite 4 offers a multitude of audio codecs for voice communication. Depending on the operating system, you will have to choose which one will function correctly. There are a few to choose from, which this lab will cover.

1. Launch the program X-Lite 4, (usually under ‘Start > Programs > CounterPath X-Lite 4’)

2. Once X-Lite 4 has loaded, click the ‘Softphone’ button on the top left, a drop down should appear.

3. Select Preferences > Audio Codecs.

4. A multitude of available audio codecs appear. Some of these work best on Mac operating systems, some work with Unix, and some work with Windows.

5. Remove all codec entries from the right box.

6. Select L16 PCM Wideband from the left box and move it to the right box.

7. Once audio codecs have been chosen, click ‘Ok’ and make a call to another station. You should be able to hear and speak clearly, as well as the person on the receiving line.

8. If communication does not work, remove L16 PCM Wideband and add BroadVoice-32.

9. If communication still does not work, remove BroadVoice-32 from the right box, and try G711 aLaw and G711 uLaw.

10. Each audio codec will have a preset bitrate and fidelity setting.

11. “Best Quality (PESQ)” setting can be left alone; this all depends on the bandwidth available on the network. There is plenty of bandwidth available since there are only a few hard phones and soft phones being used.

12. Once an appropriate audio codec has been chosen, voice communication should function completely, (you can hear and speak clearly with whoever is on the line).
