James A Leach Aquatic & Recreation Center is in Raeford, NC. The building is a two-

story, 53,000 square feet. The interior space features a Natatorium and Gymnasium, 6

multi-purpose rooms, (two of which are adjacent to the swimming pools for use as party

rooms), a concession stand, locker rooms, and offices for the Hoke County Parks and

Recreation Department. The Natatorium space houses a 7-lane, a 75-yard-long

competition swimming pool, and a separate recreation pool featuring a zero-entry ramp,

spray features, and two exercise swimming lanes. The most exciting piece is the water

slide that juts out of the facility and back into the pool area. A second-floor accessible

spectator seating area provides individual seats for 200.

The Gymnasium contains a single, high-school regulation basketball court and two

smaller cross-courts. The floor space can be converted for other sports such as volleyball

and gymnastics. Telescoping bleachers provide seating space for 650 spectators. Above

the gym floor is a 9’-0” wide walking/jogging track.

B. Company’s Mission and Vision Statements

To promote quality recreation opportunities for all citizens of the greater Hoke County

area by providing indoor and outdoor facilities and activities and to be a resource for

those who seek to improve their quality of life through recreation.

The vision for the Recreation Department is to be the natural leader in promoting

community health and well-being through fun, progressive and memorable parks and

recreation experiences and activities for everyone by: Providing safe, well-designed and

maintained facilities Providing broad-based programs and services Maximizing

community resources.

C. Company product and Service

Hoke County Parks and Recreation services are designed for school age kids and to

support adult leagues. Hoke County Parks and Recreation Center provides a variety of

athletics and programs for children including Baseball, Softball, Soccer, Football, and

Summer Camp. We also hold various events for the community, such as the Autism

Walk, Color Run, and Breakfast with Santa. In addition, Parks and Recreation offers

community buildings and park rentals for special family or business services include, but

are not limited to, the following:

• James A. Leach Aquatic & Recreation center is state of the art with regulation
fields such as football, basketball, and baseball.

• James A. Leach Aquatic & Recreation center also has a qualified sports director,
field supervisors and event coordinator.

• Arranges programs that will involve the adolescent’s family and their support
network.

II. Pre-Internship Expectations

A. Job Duties/Task
• Planning and Organizing activity program under the supervision of a

supervisor/director.

• Setting up activity equipment such as tables, chairs and instruments and keeping
up with inventory at concussion stands.

• Maintaining Cleaning recreation equipment and facility.

• Assisting participants during activities.

• Performing administrative tasks such as answering telephone calls and filling- out
paperwork and filing it.

• Attending weekly meetings with supervisor/director.

• Ensuring participants’ safety.

B. Personal Expectation
My personal expectation to be able to stay in compliance with my job description with
following protocols in the workspace, policies standards and regulations as well being
able to adapt and adjust to change and communicating with different personality and
become a leader and a trustworthy intern.

C. Goals

1. One of my personal goals is to learn everyone’s name that I will be working
with in the first three days of being on the job.

2. Complete all duties/task in a timely manner to be turned in to my
supervisor.

3. Showcase my skills/knowledge while here as an intern.
Professional Goals

1. One day to be able to help organize and caring out recreational events, youth
sports.

2. To be able to motivate and encourage all student athletes to do their best at
practices and during games.

3. All to be able to help with stats referee youth games and be responsible for all
fields and equipment.

Today I met with supervisor to review job description and

expectation of the job. I was informed that I’ll be getting

new duties every week do to the amount of thing that they

offer. I also was giving my new email address and office to

start my day. To I shadow my supervisor for a large part of

the day getting to learn the facility the different training I

will be attending why I’m here.

Today I was inroducted to other parks and rec staff

informing team of my new duties and responsiblities as an

intern. Informing everyone how excited I was to be apart of

the team and I was ready to get to working with them.

Today I sign up for to trainings First Aid and CPR infant

child an adult. And concussion. Also Directed phone call

from the front desk. copy papers.

Reported to work for staff meeting that was pushed back

due to the increment weather. My supervisor gave me

assignment to contact all family that participating in

basketball this year to inform them of all cancellation of

practices and re scheduling practice. contact all coaches as

well. assist front desk staff with all incoming phone call and

making copies that was needed.

Today responsed to all emails and answeered all incoming

phone call met with the supervisor about some things that I

was unsure about concerning the basketball program.

Supervisor inform me that I would be supervisoring all one

of the basketball leagues during my internship. I reviewed

all document that my supervisor gave me and all practice

schedule for the week. Filed all papers that was needed sent

out emails ran errands for the day .

Today reported to the facility answered all phone calls sent

out emails and directed indivduals that visit center to the

correct place. Meet local law enforce that will be working

along with during basketball to make sure everyone safe

while there child particpating in sports. Met with supervisor

to get document about the date of the upcoming training

CPR and Frist Aid. Also talk got my first weekly report . I

inform supervisor that my first week was a great week

learned alot of thing met alot of new people and I’m thank

to have the chance to be aprt of the team . Report from

supervisor was a success he inform that all duties was

completed in timly manner question was asked when I didnt

know something and communication was great and I

Reported to the gym were I was schedule to work this

weekend . Made sure concession stand had everything that

was needed for today made sure that everyone remind in the

gym during the game and was not walking around in the

hallway. Supporting staff and running errands for them

throughout the day. After all games were complete for the

day myself and the staff walked around the facility to make

sure all trash can were empty and the floor were mopped .

Once that was completed I collected all timesheets for the

part time staff.

Met with all basketball coaches to discuss the handbook

and conduct behavior. This will be a three day training that

will be held for coaches .Created this week practice logs.

Sent out email to all coach for a successful week of

basketball practice and games. Review all the program that

we offer. Made phones call to the community advistisng the

different program that Parks an rec offer.

Reported all information to my supervisor that the coaches

had as concerns. Shared the agenda with supervisor that I

created that would help the coaches better deal with parents

and loud fans. Also shared with supervisor a much needed

video for new coaches to watch. returned to office

responded to emails and directed all phone call to the

Met with supervisor to giving week 2 report . Week 2 was

great still learning a lot commicating with satff in other

department getting to see how other work and meeting new

people from the community. Inform supervisor of this

upcoming weekend schedule and check list and the location

that will be use for the game counting the number of staff

that will be needed for this weekend and making sure gym

looks the same way it look when the day ends.

Review coach’s manuel went over the changes for the new

all star draft process and the expectations behavior from all

coach’s and players. Watched video designed by the NBA

and concussions followed up a short Quiz.

Travel to Greensboro for a all day confernce that covered a

lot of different things such as new training for coaches and

kids, How to handle upset parents. Met different people

from other county spoke to them about different events and

challenges they face and how they handle them.

today refs for the game. Greeted all kids and parents as

they enter gym. Assists worker with sweeping floor during

halftime and working in concession stand to give staff a

break do to a few staff leaving early. Made a phone call to

were short but the team worked together to finish the day.

Internship Portfolio Assignment Instructions

Overview

The following outline is intended to provide you with the guidelines for your internship portfolio. Although the focus of each student is primarily oriented to accomplishing the tasks and responsibilities assigned by each host organization, the following guidelines represent the writing and reporting requirements, to be submitted according to published deadlines in order to receive a final grade for the experience.

The specific due date will be provided in Canvas. Students are required to create a portfolio (word documents and/or excel spreadsheet). This submission will satisfy the “culminating experience” requirement by Liberty University in order to successfully complete graduate school.

Instructions

This portfolio will be due according to published deadlines and includes the following requirements for acceptance:

A. Length and Format: This report shall be as long or short as necessary to communicate the required information, Times or Times New Roman font size 12 pt. should be used. Feel free to include charts and supporting material that may be provided in an attached appendix.

B. Place and Date of Submission: ONLY an electronic copy of the final report should be submitted via Canvas. Submissions in other formats will not be accepted.

C. Optional Revisions of Final Report: A student has the option of submitting the Final Report to the professor no later than the end of Module 7. If an internship report is deemed unsatisfactory for any reason, it will be returned to the respective intern for revisions and modifications. Presentation and factualness of data, spelling, and grammar will be reviewed carefully and may result in required revisions. This report should be treated as a business report which will be evaluated and will be available for community review by faculty, staff, and students. If no revisions are necessary, the report will be accepted as final.

INTERNSHIP PORTFOLIO CONTENT GUIDELINES:

The internship portfolio should include the following sections and subsections:

I. THE ORGANIZATION:

A. Overview of Host Organization: Briefly describe the type of organization in which you worked and where/how it fits into the sport industry (e.g., local, regional, national, or international). Please include its primary constituencies and the primary nature of its operations (i.e., goods or services). Briefly describe the major purposes of the organization including its mission, goals, and strategic objectives. Please include any relevant promotional brochures and any other pertinent information that describes the work of the host organization. The data might include any strategic documents such as an annual report and/or strategic management plans.

B. Structure and Personnel of Host Organization: Briefly describe the organizational structure and its effectiveness with regard to management philosophies, leadership and management styles, and its relationships with its principle governance structures and alliances (e.g., league, governing body, federation, professional association, granting authority/agency, etc.). Please include an organizational chart. Also, please include as part of your analysis, how and who within your organization evaluates personnel. How are people hired, fired, and promoted? What are the ranges of salaries for full-time employees within this organization (if available)? What is some typical lifestyle issues that employees and managers in this organization face (e.g., travel, commute to work, stress, extended hours, difficult physical working environment, etc.).

C. Budget and Financial Aspects of Host Organization: Identify as specifically as possible, the tax status of your organization (profit v. non-profit) including its federal tax-filing category (i.e., a 501 (c) 3 or S corporation). Briefly describe the reasons why this organization has its specific tax designations including the benefits and liabilities of such designations. What are the major sources of annual revenue for your organization and what are its corresponding major categories of expenditures? What limits or restrictions might be levied on this organization with regard to revenue development including fundraising? Please provide approximate percentages of the sources and categories of revenues and expenditures per year. Briefly describe the current and future growth projections of this organization with respect to its size and profitability/revenue.

D. Legal Issues Faced by Host Organization: Please describe the primary types of legal issues faced by your host organization including who provides the legal services for this organization and what type of insurance is necessary to limit the risks involved in the primary activities of the organization. What are some examples of legal issues that this organization (specifically) and its segment of the industry has or is currently facing. Please describe your organization’s risk management plan including any specific procedures that are designed to mitigate these legal risks/issues.

E. Ethical and Social Justice Issues Facing Host Organization: Please describe the critical, ethical, and social justice issues faced by this organization including some examples of ethical issues that this organization (specifically) and its segment of the industry has or is currently facing. Please describe what policies and procedures are in places that are designed to mitigate these ethical concerns and how effective they have been. Who is responsible for affecting these policies? Ethical concerns might include issues of discrimination, sexual harassment, environmental hazards, cheating or disregarding professional standards, and alcohol/substance abuse.

F. Use of Communication/Information Technology by Host Organization: Please describe the primary modes of communication and information technology utilized by your sponsor organization. Include in your analysis the type and nature of use of the various technologies employed by this organization and its effectiveness in linking staff, key constituents, and significant stakeholders that the organization must communicate with. For example, what types of telecommunication devices are used by staff outside the office (e.g., cell phones, pagers, laptop computers with modems, palm pilots, etc.)? What are the primary types of computer hardware and software used by your host organization? Does your organization rely heavily on e-mail? Does your organization have a Web site and are they involved in e-commerce?

G. Marketing and Promotional Strategies of Host Organization: Please describe how (i.e., staffing and operations) and to what extent your host organization markets and promotes itself? What are the organization’s target markets/key constituencies? What specific strategies and resources does your host organization utilize in its marketing and promotions efforts? How sophisticated are its approaches to key audiences (i.e., customers, members, etc.)? In what ways were you involved in this outreach? What would you recommend to improve its marketing and promotions efforts?

II. YOUR INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE:

Please detail your internship responsibilities being as specific as you can. Describe the most significant areas of knowledge and/or skills that you feel you acquired or expanded during your internship. What were the most positive features of your internship experience? Describe your relations with the staff at the host organization including other interns (if any). How would you characterize this organization’s human resource approach to its employees? What were the limitations of your internship experience? In what ways did you meet your learning objectives?

Would you recommend this organization to a future intern from Liberty University? Why or why not?

III. THE FUTURE: Please describe your career plans for future employment including a summary of the type of jobs and career outlook in your chosen industry segment. How do you feel your internship will/has assist you in obtaining employment in the sport or other industry? What suggestions to you have for future students seeking employment in a sport management position in the industry segment you are interested in? What strategies or ideas do you have for the future direction of the academic aspect of the sport management program at Liberty University (i.e., types of courses, style/type of instruction, practicums, etc.)?
