Do you know anyone who has a whispery voice? Do they cough a lot while attempting to drink thin liquids? If you have met someone just after major surgery in a hospital’s intensive care unit and they are trying to speak to you, you may notice his or her voice is raspy and may not engage fully with all sounds. You might have met inpiduals with temporary or chronic vocal-fold paralysis. There are two true vocal folds, and one, the other, or both may have damage from trauma, disease, misuse, or various other experiences. The purpose of this discussion is for you to gain an understanding of vocal fold paralysis.

This discussion is intended to allow you to show evidence of achievement of:

CLO3: Apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology of communication to diagnose and treat patients with communication disorders (ILO3, PLO3)

Directions

1. Explain the manifestations of unilateral (i.e., one side) or bilateral (i.e., both sides) vocal fold paralysis and some of the possible treatments for the condition. In addition, describe the one condition with vocal fold paralysis that could be immediately life threatening.
