business 101

1. I think the most important style of leadership is participative leadership. The reason I chose this style is because I feel like it is made really clear what is expected. I know that autocratic leadership is the same thing, but I think that autocratic is a snotty way of handling things. When I’m at work I want to know what changes are being talked about so that I can give my opinion for one, and for two so I can prepare for the changes gradually, opposed to walking into work one day and things have changed. We recently had a new old manager come back, and she changed some of the rules around. I knew what to expect because we all talked about what her rules where. That way when she actually started we could start things her way. It seems a lot better then the new person just coming in an putting his/her foot down and telling the employees whats going on. I guess, I feel like participative leadership is how peace is kept through companies, and I therefore think it is the best style.

2. I think the most effective leadership style described in the textbook is Participative leadership. I believe a business runs smoothly when all members of a team are involved in identifying essential goals and developing strategies to reach those goals (pg.177). My mom uses participative leadership at work. She has three co workers that also help her run the business and the are known as supervisors. She always talks with them to get their input on a situation before making a decision. When they’re all the same page and communicate together things operate very smoothly. They always come together and collaborate their idea and they support one another on the final decisions made. This is why I believe Participative leadership to be the most important style of leadership.

3. I think out of the three leadership styles; autocratic, participative, and entrepreneurial that participative is the most effective. I believe that the participative the most effective because it is, as the same suggests, participative; the employees are encouraged to give their ideas and opinions and that, I think, is good for the employees (by creating a sense of loyalty and commitment with the company) and the company (happier, harder-working employees). Out of the three participative leader choices; consultative, consensus, and democratic I would have to choose consultative just on the fact that all the employees might get together and say, “this sounds like the best option for us, the employees”, but in reality that option is not good for the company as a whole and then, if you are a consensus or democratic leader, you and the company are stuck with the crappy choice of the employees. Plus, top-management should also have the “last word” on company issues because they have probably had more experience in a business setting than most of the other employees and might have dealt with, or know how to deal with, the situation. Youth and energy will never be able to match wisdom and experience.
