VI. COURSE OUTLINE (Learning Activities and Weekly Schedule)
Even though this is an online course, you will be expected to complete and turn in work on a weekly basis. In order to schedule your work, you will complete approximately one chapter a week throughout the semester.
Because this is an online course, specific learning activities have been developed to help you work through each chapter. ALL learning activities are located in the Assignments section of the course web site. You will be expected to complete the following activities for each chapter:
1. Use the Connect Plus site materials for each chapter to better understand the materials being presented.
2. Using the text book, read each chapter before attempting to complete the assigned homework in Connect Plus.
3. Take the online TEST associated with each chapter using Connect Plus.
4. Submit a weekly summary report email to the instructor.
In addition to the weekly requirements listed above, you will be required to participate in one group project, working with your group to submit a group report for each project. Also, you will be required to complete the capstone individual project at the end of the course.
This course operates on a weekly basis. Work is assigned by 6:00 pm each Sunday evening. All required work (online homework assignment completed using Connect Plus, weekly progress report emailed to your instructor, and online weekly exam using Connect Plus) must be completed by 6:00 pm Sunday evening each week.
In order to be eligible to take the week’s exam, all online homework must be completed in Connect Plus with a minimum score of 75%. Any student taking the exam before completing the required homework withe a minimum score of 75% will receive a grade of zero on the weekly exam.
Each weekly exam will have 40 multiple choice questions – each worth 5 points – total of 200 points per exam. You will have 60 minutes to complete each test. Tests must be completed by 6:00 pm Sunday evening. Be sure you begin the exam by 5:00 pm at the latest, so you have a full hour to take the exam – if you begin after 5:00 pm, you will only have until 6:00 pm to complete the exam. Again, if the weekly homework is not fully completed with a minimum score of 75% BEFORE the exam is started, you will not be eligible to take the weekly test and you will receive a zero on the test.
Once the exam has been completed, you must email me a weekly summary report. A sample weekly summary report is posted in the Assignments folder (left side of the screen). Be sure you use the sample as an example of what is required each week.
If you have an Internet problem or computer problem during the test, you will not be allowed to reenter the test. I will allow each student to drop one exam during the semester. I will drop either the lowest score, or an incomplete test if the above occurs. It is your responsibility to have an adequate Internet connection in order to complete the weekly test. There will be no exceptions.
If you miss 2 weeks of assignments during the course (for any reason) you will receive a grade of F in the course. You have the option to drop the course, however, I will not allow you to continue in the course and I will give a grade of F for non-participation.
Projects:
There will be one (1) group project assigned during the semester and one (1) individual capstone project. Each student will be assigned to a group for each group project. Each group project will require research, evaluation of information, and submission of a group report. Group projects will generally have two weeks for completion from the date assigned. The individual capstone project will be assigned during the final week of the course and you will have one week to complete the project.
If you do not FULLY participate in EACH project, you will receive a grade of F in the class – no matter what your other scores have been. The group project and the individual capstone project are a critical part of this course and full participation by every member of the class is required.
VII. EVALUATION
1. Weekly Tests: There will be a weekly exam for each chapter. The exam will be online. The exam will open at 6:00 pm on Sunday evening each week and will close at 6:00 pm the next Sunday evening. You will have 60 minutes to complete each exam. If you lose connection and cannot complete the exam, you will be allowed to drop one exam. However, it is your responsibility to have an adequate Internet connection when taking an exam. Once you begin an exam, a timer will start – showing you the amount of time you have left to complete the exam. Once you submit the exam, you will not be allowed another chance at the exam. Once you begin the exam, do not attempt to log out and log back in – this will result in an incomplete exam with a grade of zero and you will not be allowed to retake the exam – there will be no exceptions.
We will cover 13 chapters during the semester – thus, there will be a total of 13 chapter tests. Each test will have 40 multiple choice questions – each question worth 5 points – total of 200 points per exam. You will be allowed to drop your lowest exam score. Thus, 12 exams * 200 points each = 2400 points possible.
2. Weekly Homework Assignments: Each chapter will have a series of homework assignments. You will be required to complete all homework assignments online using Connect Plus in order to be eligible to take the weekly exam. Each chapter will a number of exercises to complete – you must complete all assignments with a minimum cumulative score of 75% in order to successfully complete the assignments and be eligible to take the weekly exam.
3. Weekly Summary Report Emails: You are required to send a weekly summary report to your instructor. You must use your college email account to send the progress report. See the sample in the Assignments area so you know what is required…
4. Group Project: During the semester, I will publish one group project. Each student will be assigned to a group. All questions relating to each group project must be answered by the group completing and submitting a single report. Specific guidelines for format will be given as part of the directions for each case study. I will select a group leader who will be responsible for the organization of tasks, compiling the research data submitted by each member of the group, and submitting the final report for the project. Also, the group leader will send in a peer evaluation that evaluates each individual’s contribution to the project. Group leaders will receive an extra 20 points for the case study. The group will be required to complete research, and collaboratively produce and submit a report. The project will be worth 200 points. Full participation in all projects is required – if any student fails to fully participate in the group project, they will be removed from the course and given a grade of F in the course. If you feel you do not wish to fully participate and work in groups to complete assigned project, you should drop this course. Full participation is the group project is a required element in this course.
5. Individual (Capstone) Project: During the last week of the course, you will be assigned an individual (capstone) project. This project will take the place of a final exam. Specific guidelines for format will be given as part of the directions for the project. The final (capstone) project will be worth 200 points. If you do not complete the capstone project and submit the capstone project report, you will not be eligible to pass the course – regardless of other scores earned. There will be no exceptions.
Late Assignments will be not be accepted. You are expected to keep up with the materials as they are presented. The class runs from 6:00 pm Sunday to 6:00 pm Sunday each week. All materials are due by 6:00 pm Sunday evening, the end of the week. There will be no late or incomplete homework accepted.
Your final grade will be based on the accumulation of points and the percentages applied as follows:
10% of your final grade is based on your weekly work…
70% of your final grade is based on your weekly exams.
20% of your final grade is based on the group and capstone individual projects…However – PLEASE NOTE: Failure to fully participate in EACH project will result in a grade of F in the course – regardless of scores earned on weekly work or weekly exams.
The Grading Scale is as follows:
% earned Grade
90 – 100% A
80 – 89% B
70 – 79% C
60 – 69% D
Below 60% F
Communication from your instructor:
Each week, you will receive a Weekly Summary email from your instructor. It will include comments concerning the work completed in the previous week along with comments concerning the work due in the current week. Attached to the email will be a spreadsheet that will detail all points earned to that date. Be sure to check the spreadsheet carefully. If you feel an error has been made, be sure to email your instructor directly with your questions. The Weekly Summary email will be sent after all work has been received and graded at the end of each week. You should receive the email by Tuesday each week. If you do not receive the email by Tuesday evening each week, be sure to email your instructor. Please do not email your instructor before Tuesday evening – it does take a bit of time to get everything graded and updated, so give me time to get things done and out to you…
VIII. Policies
Once you check into the class and submit the required course contract email – you are officially enrolled. If you decide not to participate, it is your responsibility to drop the course within the time frame given in the schedule of classes. I will keep track of the Discussion Board to monitor your participation and to provide guidance where needed.
If you have a personal problem that you do not wish to share with other students in the class, you may email me directly. I plan to check my email for this course during my office hours as well as during the week. If you email me after these hours, do not expect a response for a minimum of 24 hours. Netiquette Policy
Online etiquette is extremely important. We must show respect to one another at all times. Rudeness and disrespect will not be tolerated in this course. Please recognize that communication is rather “flat” online where we cannot see and hear each other. So be cautious when using sarcasm or negative statements. Familiarize yourself with “smileys,” online icons that show emotion, so that you lessen the risk of offending the person you are trying to communicate with. Whenever possible, give constructive criticism and treat others the way you would like to be treated. For more info, see
http://www.newbie.net/cybercourse/09netiquette.html
to check out the Smiley FAQ.
Technology Knowledge Expectation
I expect that you have basic Internet skills if you are in this course. Those skills include the ability to login to my course web site, send and receive email with attachments, and be able to use the links included with the course materials. Also, you must be familiar with MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint to complete the course. If you need to review any of the Internet basics, please go to the Microsoft site and brush up.
Student Commitment
You should budget adequate time each week for reading the textbook and completing all online assignments. You will be responsible for keeping up to date with all lessons and assignments. Online courses take as much time (and sometimes more) to complete successfully as traditional courses, so please plan accordingly. During the summer, traditional courses meet on-campus 6 hours per week with an additional 6 hours of outside work per week. Therefore, you need to be able to commit a minimum of 12 hours per week to this course in order to be successful.
Instructor Commitment
As your instructor, I will follow the course as detailed in this syllabus. If any changes are required I will announce them well in advance to give you time to adjust. You can count on my availability during office hours, and you have the right to expect prompt responses to your questions, comments, and requests. I will grade your work in a timely manner and return it to you with constructive commentary. In this distance-learning course, you will receive at least the same attention and care you would find in a traditional class.
Plagiarism Statement
Plagiarism is the use of direct quotations without identifying them as such, or the summarizing or paraphrasing of other quotations. If you do not specifically identify the source of ideas other than your own, you are plagiarizing.
Cheating is the unauthorized giving or receiving of information in examinations, quizzes, assignments or other class exercises. If someone else takes online tests or quizzes in your name, this is also considered cheating.
Honesty and integrity are very important in higher education. This standard pertains to what is written as well as what is spoken. To claim to have written something that is not entirely your own work is a violation of academic and personal integrity.
You are solely responsible for the preparation and presentation of your assignments. Each homework assignment, written activity, and test should be your own work. When working collaboratively, it is acceptable to ask for criticism and help, but such input should be limited and acknowledged when appropriate. When writing a paper, it is recommended that you have someone proofread and critique your work, but it is not acceptable that he or she rewrites whole sections in the process.
Any violation of the items mentioned will cause you to be terminated from the course with a grade of F. Also, you will be referred to the Dean of Students for further disciplinary action.
IX. GRADES AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER
Grades are available through on-line through MySite at www.ivc.edu.
X. eMAIL ADDRESS:
I will only send email to your IVC email account. Be sure you know how to access your IVC email account so you will be able to receive and respond to email from your instructor.
XI. STANDARD OF CONDUCT
The college student is considered a responsible adult. The student’s enrollment indicates acceptance of the standards of conduct published in the college catalog. A complete copy of the CODE OF STUDENT CONDUCT is available in the office of the Vice President of Instruction and is printed in the IVC COLLEGE CATALOG.
