Reflection Question Assignment 6 Principles of Biology BIOL-100, Fall 2012

Due Date: Wednesday, December 5 at 2:30 pm in class

Remember to upload your assignment to Turnitin.com. Follow all instructions in the syllabus

and on Moodle for submission of assignments.

Print out your digital receipt. Attach it at the back of your assignment, with your typed

answers in front.

Please write your mailbox number in the top right corner of the front page.

Instructions:

Answer each of the following questions. Write enough to answer the question completely and show

that you have thought through the question thoroughly. You can use approximately one long

paragraph or two short paragraphs for each answer as a general guideline.

Remember that all written assignments must be your own, original work. You can work with a friend

to do the online activities, but you must submit your own drawings and writing. Any ideas that are not

your own must be cited appropriately. See the syllabus and academic honesty section on Moodle for

guidelines on citing references.

Type your answers, staple multiple pages, and submit a paper copy in class.

The exercise is numbered step by step. Provide answers to questions 2, 6, 9, 10, and 11. Do not

include the text of this assignment in your document.

Go to the following website:

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/eheart/

Note that if you scroll down, there are links that will take you through the exercises on this site, starting
with “Text Electric Heart Home”. You will be going through these sections one at a time, but you can
click on the links at the bottom of each page to go from one to the other.

1. Click on “Map of the Human Heart” to start. Also, you can refer to Ch. 23 in your textbook for this and
the following exercises.

2. Read through the steps that show the flow of blood through the human heart (also see Fig. 23.4 on
page 499 of your text). Draw your own diagram of the heart. Label the left and right ventricles, the left
and right atria (singular: atrium), the inferior and superior vena cava, the aorta, and the right and left
pulmonary veins. (You can watch the animation, or scroll over the parts of the heart to highlight the flow
of blood. Also, scroll down to the bottom of the page for a more detailed diagram.)

3. Click on “Amazing Heart Facts” to go to the next section. Review the information about the heart.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/eheart/

4. Click on “The Artificial Human” to go to the next page.

5. Click on the following parts of the body to see what technologies are being developed to replace
these body parts with transplants or artificial parts:

eye ear lung heart heart valves blood liver pancreas kidney skin arteries (scroll down)

6. Write a paragraph describing what you think about these methods of replacing organs and tissues
with transplants or artificial materials. Is this something you think is exciting, or scary? Would you
want to have an artificial heart? What would it be like to have most of your body be made of
transplanted or artificial material?

7. Click on “Pioneering Surgeon” to go to the next page. (This is 2 pages long, so click Continue after the
1

st
page.)

8. Read the interview with Dr. Frazier on the possibility of developing an artificial heart.

9. Why does Dr. Frasier think it is important to develop an artificial heart? Do you agree with him?
Explain your reasoning.

10. Describe what happened with the attempts to transplant the JARVIK-7 artificial heart.

11. Describe some of the other artificial heart technologies that scientists are currently working on.
Give your opinion of whether these technologies should be pursued by scientists or not, and explain
why you think so.
