The Real Food Challenge:
In order to have sustainability of food in the nation, it is important to identify the real challenges that affect food production. A recent study by Harvard University shows that if the current food supply problems are not solved, their will be increase in poverty and hunger levels by the year 2015. This report is devastating owing to the fact that a change in food and agricultural systems would lead to sustainable food supply. Consequently, it is time to rethink our food production, change the systems of sharing and consumption of the food. Notably, forestry, fisheries and agricultural sectors are factors that should be united to provide food that is nutritious and able to generate income for many people in the world. Essentially, this would also help to protect environment and also support development that is rural centered. This paper discusses the impact of Real Food Challenge campaign to the food choices.
Real food Challenge is a nationwide campaign that promotes efficient methods of food production that are local, sustainable, humanely and economically fair. The campaign aims at carrying out an awareness strategy for food production methods through understanding of the real issues that prevent healthy food production. According to researchers of the campaign, some of the problems leading to increased poverty levels and hunger are centered on the degradation of the natural environment. Studies show that over the years their has been degradation of soils, pollution of water, destruction of forests and biodiversity, which are essential factors in food production. Generally, changes in climatically patterns have increased risks associated with disasters such as floods and droughts affecting food production. However, a change in agricultural systems is needed to ensure increased production to meet the increased demands in the markets (Jain 36).
The sectors that are responsible for food production should come up with solutions that help to increase local production of foods. To begin with, the ministry of forest should conserve all water catchment areas to enhance production of food through irrigational methods. This would increase food production in all year round. Secondly, the ministry of fisheries should increase production of fish to ensure that people have high nutritious meals. The government should also put pressure on all sectors of food production to have maximum produce so that their can be a surplus in the production. Moreover, all food production sectors should be made sustainable to meet the demands of the increasing population. Some of the other practices that increase sustainability are solar dying and having integrated management of pests and insects to reduce destruction of food produce. Exploitation of new ways of production is also effective as they enhance production that is sustainable to the environment besides increasing agricultural productivity (Planck 134).
According to real food challenge campaign our food choices and actions determine our hunger levels. The government should take an initiative of investing in small scale farming to increase food production at the local level and increase nutrition to the poorest in the society. It is evident that a good use of agricultural biodiversity can lead to consumption of diets that are more nutritious, sustainable farming systems and also enhanced livelihoods to all communities that are depended on farming and agriculture. In addition, the government should create cereal banks in order to address the issue of food production in all year round. This is because conservation of food supply helps to leverage the food availability for all individuals thus increasing the level of productivity (Sara 212).
The government should put pressure to production companies to go green through investment in green technologies. Energy poverty has been attributed as the major cause and fundamental barrier to hunger reduction and food sustainability. However, the government should provide green methods of power production to the rural areas to increase production of food in the rural areas. Furthermore, green investments in the marine are also helpful as they will contribute to social and economical benefits in regard to food production. The governments should also champion for green growth and production of food through green initiatives. This helps to increase agricultural production and also supports conservation of biodiversity (Swaminathan 78).
In conclusion, real food challenge campaign advocates for direct investments in water and soil conservation have a positive impact in climate adaptation. This increases food sustainability all the year round and increases availability of food commodities easier in the rural areas. Erosion control and sustainable land management practices are also essential for increased production of food in the rural areas. Moreover, real food campaign is focused on reduction of all food challenges and promotes making of decisions that will increase efficiency in the food system. The campaign is centered on adaptation of effective methods to food production. Generally, a shift to green production of food is highly recommended so as to increase high nutrition intake, reduction destruction of biodiversity and pollution levels. The real food challenge campaign calls for unity in all sectors of food production in order to increase food sustainability.
