Weight distributed as follows: Group report 30%; Presentation of findings 20%; Individual reflection 10%. Work in pairs. Choose an identifiable group or community in society that meets together, research the group (its composition, history, features etc) and then interview three to five representatives of this community. Do not choose a group of which either team member is a part, or with which you would strongly identify. For instance, you could choose a cultural group, community cultural organisation, business-based cultural group or society, political group associated with a specific culture, a specific support group etc. Check your choice of group with
your workshop leader. Provide a report (in report format with contents page and headings) that addresses the following points:
Who is the group and how are they defined? (both self definition and external definition)
How did you contact the group, how did you investigate who they are, and what are the results of your interviews with their members?
How can members who are not part of this group understand and communicate with members of the group?
What are the relevant ‘concept notes’ you would suggest to aid communication with this group? (i.e., how can you describe the way important parts of language, words, special concepts etc are defined by the group in a special way to aid understanding of people outside the group).
What strategic suggestions would you offer to form and build a communicative relationship with this group?
What are your experiences of learning about a culture that is not your own?
Present your report and findings in a 20 minute presentation to your workshop group in either week 13 or 14.
