Year 8 PRS – Rich world, poor world
Channel 4 produced a documentary that filmed Sorious Samura, a Londoner (born in Sierra Leone) living in an Ethiopian village for a month. He had to survive on just everything and anything the locals had to eat, drink or use as a luxury. This had a huge impact on his health and weight! Your task is to compare your diet for a week to a month of his, and to investigate the quality of life in both countries.
The Task:
To produce an A3 poster which shows a comparison between the diets, health and living conditions of people in the UK and Ethiopia. There are 3 tasks:
1. Comparing diets in the UK and Ethiopia
Record what you eat and drink for a week. Using your notes from the film ‘Living with hunger’, compare your weekly diet with the typical diet of an Ethiopian villager. You should present this as a table on your poster. (2)
Write a paragraph comparing and contrasting the 2 diets, quoting facts and figures. (2)
2. In what ways is the quality of life different in the UK and Ethiopia?
Find some information about the following ‘development indicators’ for both the UK and Ethiopia, and present this as a table (you can use the internet, or an atlas may help)
Calorie intake per person
Average earnings (GNP)
Access to clean water (%)
Amount of people per doctor
Literacy rates (%)
Number of babies dying (infant mortality) (2)
Now use the statistics you have found to describe the differences in quality of life in the 2 countries. Your aim is to write an interesting paragraph for an intelligent reader! (2)
3. Find images of the UK and Ethiopia which portray differences in quality of life. Add these to your poster. Remember your images should be labelled with what they are showing.
