1st Classmates’ Primary Task Response

The most important thing that I learned from the presentation was the order of operations. I think this is very important when working with Algebra problems. Order of operations when followed correctly will give you the correct answer. I also learned that it is important to work from left to right when solving an Algebra problem. I never knew that before and now it makes sense to me. I will use this to my advantage along with visiting the Math Center, which will help me better understand Algebra and be able to learn from the center what I need to do to solve a problem. The Math Center will be very helpful to me throughout this course.

The steps for the order of operations show the order in which an equation should be done in. You must do what is in parenthesis first working your way out of the parenthesis. The second step would be your exponents, the third step would be multiplication and division, and the fourth step would be addition and subtraction. You must work from left to right. I will remember this process by taking the first letter in each step and making a sentence out of it to remember the order of operation. I believe the order of operations is important because it will give you the correct answer. In my personal life, I might use the order of operations for directions to find a certain place I am looking for. This will help me so I do not get lost.

This is an example of a problem: 12+10*16-(6+18)

2nd Classmates’ Primary Task Response

The assignment requirement was to review one of the presentations in the Mathematic Center and write a paragraph on what I learned and how I will benefit from revisiting the Mathematic Center.

I reviewed basic algebra skills, numbers, and algebraic translation. All of this seemed foreign to me. I have not done any algebra work since I was in high school. Listening and watching the presentation was very hard for me to comprehend. I realize that I have a lot of work ahead of me.

Starting, I think it is important for me to focus on basic algebra skills. This will give me the knowledge I need to start with. There were many terms used that I am not familiar with. The presentation briefly discussed polynomials. Polynomials are part of our homework assignment in MyLabsPlus.

Order of operation is interesting. It is something I use on a daily basis. I do the same thing every workday. Having school age children I am aware of the order of operation pertaining to match. The order is parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, and then add and subtract. This is just like getting ready for work in the morning. You get up, shower, brush your teeth, then you get dressed. The order of operation is very important because certain things are supposed to take place at a certain time. If you do not follow the correct order, you will not get the correct answer.

My math equation is:

7+12-3×5+(8 divided by 2)

7+12-3×5+4

7+12-15+4

19-19=0

F.Y.I. — This is the first algebra class I have ever taken, so I know (basically) nothing about it! I am a 1st year student of the BSCJ-HS program.

Part I

As instructed, I went to the Learning Center, and selected “Learning Labs”. From there, I selected the “Mathematics Center”, and clicked on “Presentations”. After reviewing the different presentations, I found it difficult for me to choose just one. Since I have never taken an Algebra class before, I have chosen “Data Evaluation & Algebraic Concepts”; I contemplate that this presentation might be the most helpful to me for success in this course. Does anyone have another suggestion for me?

From this exposition, I have gathered that equations and inequalities are implemented daily in the actual world; they pertain to the cost, the sales, and for finding balance points. These are used in businesses, criminal justice, and the economy. Formulas are utilized for applications, which afford a representational depiction of a precise result. Economic forecast calculations are utilized built on the present trade and industry circumstances. An example of this would be discovering the speed at which an automobile is traveling founded on time and distance. Equivalency is a statement with an equal sign (=) operator. Inequalities contain >,<, > = <. Formulas are used for application on a daily basis; solving equation is a step when processing information into useful data, and by using graphs, data for analysis summarizes information more proficiently. By continuing to visit the Mathematics Center, I will be able to increase my mathematical skills; Algebra should not remain a foreign language to me.

Part II:

The steps, for order of operations, are exponents and roots, multiplication and division, as well as addition and subtraction (CTU Learning Lab Presentation). Since I have never heard of this model before now, I have to say that I have not utilized a recollection strategy to assist me with remembering this model; at least none I am aware of, but an example (Russell, D.) of this would be Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally (Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiply, Divide, Add, Subtract). To get the right answer, it is imperative to follow this order instead of solving the problem from left to right. The rules are calculations must be done from left to right, calculations in parenthesis are done first; if more than one set of brackets, do the inner brackets first. Exponents must be the next to be done. Next, multiply and divide in the order the operations take place. Then, add and subtract in the order the operations happen.

In my work environment, I could apply the order of operations by calculating a residents’ fluid intake. Measuring by cc, I would add the fluids consumed at breakfast, lunch and at snack-time. An example of this would be 2(240) + 2(240) + 120 = 480 + 480 + 120 = 1080cc. A simple math problem, which contains 5 of the 6 steps of the order of operations, could be written like this (all steps, except division are used).
