I am glad you’ve addressed this! Diabetes can cause a lot of issues for many of the body’s organ systems. It is definitely not specific to the pancreas. Someone tell us more about the damages we will see to the various organs throughout the body in a patient with diabetes.

I personally had a over active thyroid that turned out to be graves disease, so I understand what you were talking about. I had to take a radiation pill to kill it and then now I take thyroid medications to regulate the amount of hormone is released so that my organs are not affected. I understand what you mean the most when you talk about regulating your bodies temperature because I am always either to hot or to cold.

The pineal gland is located in the middle of the brain. It secretes melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate other hormones and maintains the body’s circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm is the body’s sleep wake cycle. The normal function is when it is dark; the body produces more melatonin and when it’s light, the production of melatonin drops. When we are exposed too little light during the day or too much light in the evening, it messes with our body’s normal melatonin cycle. Other things that mess with our melatonin cycle include: jet lag, shift work and poor vision. Melatonin is also responsible for the timing and release of female reproductive hormones. It helps in determining when a women is going to menstruate, for how long and when a women stops menstruating (menopause).

It’s very alarming that there are so many people in the U.S. who have diabetes when it could be prevented with diet modification and exercise. I worked with a guy who was over weight for years and his doctor warned him over and over again that if he didn’t lose weight he was just asking for trouble. Well, he finally pushed his luck and at one point his doctor told him he had type 2 Diabetes. Of course, NOW he was scared and began to modify his diet and he did lose a considerable amount of weight. I left that job a few years ago and from the pictures I have seen of him on Facebook, he looks like he has gained the weight back. I don’t understand why people don’t listen when a doctor tells them what’s going to happend if they don’t start taking care of themselves. This guy was in his 30’s at the time. That’s so young to do such damage to yourself. I think it’s very sad.

We are seeing kids now with type 2 diabetes and that is amazing to me! The numbers are huge and we are full of excuses as to why we have a society that is overweight/ obese and sitting on the couch rather than exercising. We seem to love to eat fast food because of our busy lifestyles. How can we change these things so that we become a healthier society and so that our children are not at risk at such early ages?
