Research Paper Guide
OBJECTIVE: To produce a research paper with trustworthy facts about a particular Data Mining/Data
Analytics tool available in the commercial world. These facts include how it helps the data scientist
perform the steps we discussed in Chapters 1, 2, 4, and 6 including METHODS, Statistics, Data Prep, and
Data Analysis in particular. It should be an independent assessment and conclusion based on your
research from independent sources.
TOPIC: Choose one of the data mining/analytics tools that exists. Pick one that is robust with
functionality that covers most of the features we have discussed in chapters 1-3. Topic / choice must be
approved by the professor.
SOURCES: You can use the vendor’s website to describe the tool and generally its strong points, but not
to evaluate and report on its potential as a good choice for data mining and analytics. Therefore, use
independent IT sources (e.g., those listed at Feedspot’s top 100 news sites). A few with a long history of
being excellent news sources that I personally trust are:

FORMAT: Please provide proper citations for statements made about functionality, usefulness,
versatility, reliability, any strong statement of fact, etc. You can use any format for doing so as long as
you are consistent in doing so and follow a generally accepted one. For example, you could just use
footnotes and provide the cite on the page where the narrative from a source has been used. In the cite,
again used a commonly accepted format and be consistent but it can be any of those.
SCOPE: You should provide enough content to make a reliable assessment about the value of using that
Data Mining/Data Analytics tool.
LENGTH: It should be at least 1,200 words. There is no upper limit to length / number of words.
DUE: The research paper due date is posted in Canvass in the class calendar/schedule and other places.
A drop location in Canvas will be provided for delivery but you are permitted to send it by email before
the due date.

OBJECTIVE: To do a project that emulates the general steps of Data Mining & Data Analytics as
explained in our textbook (Define Objective/Problem & target variable, Sample for Training, Sample for
Testing, Final Model). In addition to these instructions, students will be using an Excel Plug-in tool –
Active Data.
1. THE BUSINESS OBJECTIVE
You will each be allowed and asked to find a real-life problem that could
be solved or helped by a data mining project. If you have something at
work, that would be most preferred situation. It could also be solely
personal; such as data mining on health, exercise, money management,
etc. It just needs to be something that would fit a data mining project.
2. IDENTIFYING RELEVANT DATA TO EXTRACT
You will need to find the data in public files or your own resources. Some possible sources are:
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST): Data | NIST
National Bureau of Labor Statistics: Databases, Tables & Calculators by Subject (bls.gov)
The above has many different databases on Economics, Labor, Performance, Employment, etc.
Center for Disease Control: Databases for Public Health Research | cdc.gov
You MUST identify the source of your data.
3. DATA PREPARATION/TRANSFORMATION
The files that are obtained are likely to need some preparation and/or transformation in order
to use Active Data. If the database files are NOT excel, then convert it to an excel file.
Make sure to address the following possible problems and what to do with them. If any of these
factors are true of your data, you MUST address the problem and what you did to mitigate risks
and ensure effectiveness of the subsequent model (target variable).
 Missing values
 Unreasonable values
 Outliers
 How to transform data in the dataset to a new variable that is more useful based on the
business objective
4. MODEL BUILDING/METHOD & TOOL
We will be using ACTIVE DATA and EXCEL functions to perform the required analytics below.
Active Data is a 30-day free trial version that plugs into EXCEL as a tab on the menu line.

5. DATA ANALYTICS & REPORT
In order to satisfy the objective, you will need to do the following (You may annotate a
worksheet or add a separate word document):
 Descriptive Statistics on the key field in the key file. That must be accompanied by your
analysis of factors about the dataset that are favorable, unfavorable, or interesting
enough to be reported to the who engaged us or affect our data mining or analytics.
 Identify outliers in the dataset and describe your decision of what to do with them
(omit, change value, use as is). Mark the line of data that contains an outlier by adding
another column and identifying each outlier and include the actual number of
deviations from the MEAN.
 An appropriate description and results of training data set, and test data set. Make sure
to provide a graphic to make it easier to assimilate your conclusions. Make sure you
write a summary of the test, why you used that model / formula, and an explanation of
what the results mean.
NOTES: NON-PC, Technical Difficulties, etc. that prevent using Active Data
The following is a list of what functions in Excel you can use to satisfy the project requirements,
including a specified list of the deliverables. In some cases, the deliverable can be measured by a
formula instead of a function. Please also remember to figure out a way to identify the outliers in your
dataset. For example, once you figure out which rows of data contain an outlier, you can highlight that
row or the cell with the target value in YELLOW or some other color, or add a column titled OUTLIER and
include the number of standard deviations from the MEAN.
