Continuous improvement in healthcare is crucial to giving high-quality care. By implementing a continuous improvement strategy, hospitals and health systems can improve patient experience. Also, enhance treatments that are needed by discovering improvements in patient care. Healthcare organizations also need to improve by reducing costs and gaining an understanding of their patient population (White & Griffith, 2019).
One of the main goals of continuous improvement is to enhance the patient experience by addressing problems that arise in delivering care. Also, by reducing waiting times, improving communication, and making patients feel heard. When it comes to enhancing treatments of healthcare organizations, they are able to then focus on patient-centered care and responsiveness to patient needs. By collecting feedback from patients, healthcare providers can improve changes that lead to better interaction and trust in the healthcare systems. Additionally, continuous improvement helps the effectiveness of medical treatments by ensuring healthcare organizations follow evidence-based practices. Continuous improvement plays a vital role in discovering new ways to improve healthcare outcomes. By using data-driven decision-making and following the reflective equilibrium model, healthcare providers can improve and give the best care (Morrison & Furlong, 2019). When it comes to costs it is important to always stay on top financially. As healthcare costs rise, healthcare organizations need to find ways to operate efficiently without compromising quality of care. Healthcare organizations need to continue to improve and gain an understanding of their patient population. Understanding the needs and demographics of their patient population will give health organizations the ability to identify health disparities.
An area in health care that could benefit from continuous improvement is waiting times at a healthcare clinic or hospital. How many times have you gone to the doctor’s office or ER and waited hours to be seen? This has been an ongoing problem in the healthcare system and definitely can use improvement. Clinics need to make sure they have the appropriate number of staff to check in and discharge patients in a timely manner. Also scheduling appointment times better, so there is enough time for the physician to see each patient without rushing and not giving enough time to everyone. Improve patient communication by calling patients and sending texts to have them confirm they will indeed be coming into the doctor’s office. When it comes to the ER, make sure staff are appropriately educated and trained by checking in the patients and who should be seen first. Also, having the appropriate number of staff per shift will decrease waiting times. By implementing these continuous improvements clinics and hospitals will be able to reduce waiting times, better patient outcomes, and increase patient satisfaction.
